CALL TO ORDER–Chairman Crawfordcalled the meeting to order at 5.30p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES–Chairman Crawfordpresented the March 28,2012Minutes to the Commissioners
forchanges or corrections. There being none, Chairman Crawford accepted the minutes as presented.
ACTIVITY REPORTS
A.Recreation and Human ServicesActivity Report-February/March–Lynn Smithpresented the reportand
answered questions regarding the ProposedShade Project at Pearson Park Amphitheatre.Lynn Smith
reported the “Thank You for all You Do!” Volunteer Recognition luncheon was a successful and well attended
event. Approximately $30,000was receivedin sponsorshipsto pay for the event.
Commission Huitt reportedthe afternoon dancesfor the Seniorsheld at the Downtown Anaheim Community
Center (DACC) are being scheduled on the same day as the evening dancesevery second and fourth Friday
eachmonth. Lynn Smith will askstaff look into it.
B.Recreation and Human Services Park Ranger Report–Lynn Smith presented the report.
C.Parks Capital Project Progress Report–Pamela Galerapresented the report and provided updates onthe
following projects:
Cerritos Property Acquisition–The City was not selected for the grant award;
Dog Park at Olive Hills Park–City staff will continue to create a base plan and work on Master Plan
development;
Ponderosa Community Center and Gymnasium–The City was not selected for the grant award. City
staff will continue to address the needs of the community;
SCE Dog Park–City staff will meet with Southern California Edison to go over the Master Plan and
Agreement;and negotiations will continue on Site Plan.

D.Senior Citizen Sub-Committee Report–Commissioner Huitt reported the following:
Free pet adoption event special for those 55 years old or older will be held on May 5, 2012 by the
Orange County Animal Shelter;
10 Facts about Mental Health & Aging information;
Programs offered by the Orange County Office on Aging;
CalOptima providesmedical programs for dual eligible individuals who have Medi-Cal and Medicare;
California Departmentof Aging Draft Plan 2012-2016 is availablefor review;
California State University, Fullerton is offering a Whole Person Wellness Workshop May 22-24, 2012;
“You’re Never Too Old to Play Step Up for Active Aging” event will be held at the Senior Center in
Huntington Beach on May 23, 2012;
10,000 individuals reach the age of 55 everyday and it is called the “Silver Tsunami”;
Thank you for moving exercise classes for the Seniors held at DACCto the Downtown Anaheim Youth
Center Gymnasiumduring the DACC closure.
NEW BUSINESS
A.Hi Neighbor Community Gardens Presentation–Janet Lee made a presentation onthe current Community
Gardens project and answered questionsfrom Commissioners. Janet reportedthatthere are currently 24
schools supporting this project andthere are three temporary garden locations in the South, East and West
areas of Anaheim. Janet requested the help of the Parks & Recreation Commissioners to acknowledge
those involved with the Community Gardens projectsand to attend a Community Garden Opening event.
Commissioner Huitt suggested the Community Garden Presentation be given at the senior centers.
Commissioner Brennan suggested the Anaheim Union HighSchool District School Board and local churches
becontacted to support this project.
ViceChair Manes stated she can help advertise Community Garden information through the Anaheim
Bulletin and OC Register newspaper.
INFORMATIONAL ITEMS–Vice Chair Manes announcedthe following:
Paint Your Heart Out events will occur onApril 28, 2012 and May 5, 2012;
20Annual Children’s Festival is scheduled for May 19, 2012;

Annie Accolade Awards Dinner will be held on April 26, 2012;
Ponderosa Farmers Market opened on April 24, 2012;
Free Health Fair will be held at the West Anaheim Medical Centeron June 3, 2012;
Greek Festival is scheduled for May 18-20, 2012.
