Sister City 2012/06/25 CITY OF ANAHEIM SISTER CITY COMMISSION MINUTES June 25, 2012 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: James Dinwiddie, Ann Gallagher, Lisa Gin, Laurie Leonard, Linda Newby, Kyndell Paine, Anna Piercy, Pat Pina, Kyoko Smith, Jennifer Vaughn, Virginia Zlaket COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Shannon Buhrmaster, Russell Lahodny, John Nguyen STAFF PRESENT: Greg Garcia Erin GUESTS PRESENT: Brian Chuchua Leah Beattie Agenda Posting: A complete copy of the Anaheim Sister City Commission Agenda was posted at 3:00 p.m. on June 22, 2012 at Anaheim City Hall. Public Input: Commissioner Paine explained that members of the public are invited to address the Anaheim Sister City Commission and will be called upon under Agenda Item No. VII. Public Comment. I. CALL TO ORDER The meeting of the Anaheim Sister City Commission (ASCC) was called to order th City Hall, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd., 7 Floor, Anaheim, California. II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOTION: Commissioner Leonard offered a Motion, seconded by Commissioner Newby AND MOTION CARRIED (Vote: 12-0; Absent: Buhrmaster, Lahodny, Nguyen; No vacant seats) that the Anaheim Sister City Commission does hereby approve the minutes as presented. Commissioner Leonard reported that this month there was a refund for unused tickets to Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain in the amount of $2,400.00, therefore the current balance is $16,626.94 Additionally Commissioner Leonard presented a financial reconciliation spreadsheet from the trip to Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. IV. CITY COUNCIL UPDATE Greg Garcia reported that Commissioner Nguyen gave an overview of the current ASCC activities with the City Council where he presented a brief staff report and pictures of the delegation on their recent trip to Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. Also discussed with the City Council was the partnership with Mito, Japan and the upcoming student exchange activities. Council asked to be regularly apprised of the goals and activities of the ASCC. V. MITO STUDENT EXCHANGE UPDATE Commissioner Zlaket affirmed updates regarding the Mito student exchange activities on the following items: The exchange students are comprised of eight young ladies and two young men. There will be three chaperones. Marne Colby will serve as the teacher to work with the incoming exchange students. The fingerprinting/background and home checks are currently being conducted and there will be a meeting with all of the confirmed host families in early July. The welcome barbecue will be held at the home of Michelle Lieberman on Saturday, July 28. A commissioner sign-up sheet is available and each commissioner will need to indicate which events they will be involved with and who will be the daily coordinator for each event. There will be daily classes and van transportation for the students and chaperones. Greg Garcia ran through the detailed student exchange itinerary from arrival date on July 27 through departure date on August 4 which includes numerous activities throughout the week. Activities planned are daily classes at the Downtown  Anaheim Sister City Commission April 23, 2012 Page 3 Community Center, a welcome barbecue, an Angel game, a tour of Sunkist Elementary School, a tour of the police department, a fire station tour, a tour of Oak Canyon Nature Trail, a tour of City Hall, a meet and greet with the Mayor and Council Members, bowling, a day at the beach with an evening bon fire (possibly surf lessons), a possible activity at Anaheim Hills Golf Course, a day at Disneyland, and the Sayonara Dinner. The commissioners collaboratively discussed how they will coordinate, contribute and volunteer their time for the various activities and events. VI. CHINESE SISTER CITY Progress Report Commissioner Gallaugher announced that a Chinese delegation from Hangzhou, China is confirmed to be in Anaheim on Tuesday, July 3 at 4:00 p.m. This will be an introduction meeting between Anaheim and Hangzhou. Commissioner Paine noted that the Disney Resort in Shanghai, China is expected to be finished in 2015 and that there is a nearby district, Pudong, which is a huge economic/cultural hub with an international airport in Shanghai. VII. COMMISSIONER (RE)APPOINTMENTS Greg Garcia announced that the City Council has scheduled a delay action on the ASCC appointments and that the action is now scheduled for the City Council meeting on July 10, 2012. VIII. KAISER GRANT Greg Garcia indicated that he has received a general reminder for the commission to complete a form showing how the ASCC plans to utilize the grant funds received from Kaiser. Greg noted that the funds are specifically to be used for Mito and he encouraged the commission to think about ideas and indentify how the funds will be spent. Through discussion, an idea was suggested to have an exercise with the exchange students and chaperones assigning them to present ideas on how to best utilize the funds to help their community in Mito, Japan. IX. AD HOC SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS Commissioner Newby reported that the delegation trip to Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain was a success and she shared pictures with the commission.  Anaheim Sister City Commission April 23, 2012 Page 4 Commissioner Gin discussed the fundraising updates and presented a tentative flyer for the upcoming event at the Anaheim White House. The date, time and details are currently being worked out and Commissioner Gin will email everyone the final version once all of the details have been confirmed. Commissioner Newby discussed additional impending plans to have a Spanish wine tasting on a Sunday afternoon with sponsorship possibilities. X. STAFF REPORT All current staff report items have been discussed in the notes above. XI. PUBLIC COMMENT Mr. Brian Chuchua commented that after attending the amazing Spain delegation trip, his interest has been piqued in the ASCC Commission and its goals and activities. Ms. Leah Beattie commented that she is interested in attending a delegation trip to Japan when it takes place. XII. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Commissioner Zlaket announced her resignation as commissioner for the ASCC, as she has accepted another full time commitment and will be unavailable to make the ASCC meetings. She stated that she has really enjoyed her relationship with all of the commissioners and has been happy to have been a part of the ASCC for many years. Commissioner Smith announced that this will also be her last meeting, as she will also be resigning from the commission. She has been very honored to have been a part of the commission and she has offered to help with translation efforts, etc. whenever needed. The commission thanked both Commissioners Zlaket and Smith for their dedication. They wished them well and expressed that they will be greatly missed. XIII. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:17 p.m. to July 23, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. at the Anaheim City Hall, Conference Room #2.
