CALL TO ORDER: The meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission was called to order by Chair Larsen at 6:40 p.m. 2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Dorothy Rose from the OC Symphony spoke about their upcoming schedule and invited the Commissioners to attend the concerts. She also shared that the OC Symphony performed at the grand opening of the Grand Plaza at the Anaheim Convention Center and they will be playing at the State of the City luncheon coming up in February. She also told the Commission that she has been named as the Orange County Symphony Champion for the Arts and noted that she had ballots with her if anybody would like to purchase them. Commissioner Castillo asked if the Orchestra had thought about doing contemporary music, as they had the pop series in the past; Dorothy Rose explained that the OC works with contemporary music and they collaborate with them and are definitely open to the possibility of performing that type of music. Larry Rosenberg, Executive Director of the Anaheim Ballet, spoke about the Ballet and its dancers and programs. He shared information about their upcoming performances as well as the International Dance Festival that will be held on August 10th in Anaheim. 4. CORRESPONDENCE: Janis shared the December 2012 newsletter received from the Anaheim Art Association with the Commissioners. 5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioner Jabbar made a motion to approve the minutes for the November 15, 2012 meeting; Commissioner Deneau made a second and the motion passed. 6. GALLERIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Chair Larsen reported that the Gallery is booked for the remainder of the year and reviewed the schedule. y 9 in conjunction with the Art Crawl. They are working on the entertainment which will be either Jazz guitar or saxophone. 7. ART FACILITIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Commissioner Deneau reported that he, Vice-Chair Maya and Chair Larsen will be meeting with the two new City Council Members soon to let them know what the Commission is doing; Janis stated that she will provide two additional copies of the report to him for those meetings. Commissioner Deneau shared a clipping from the Wall Street Journal reporting that Equity Residential Company, which owns the AT&T property, sold its entire portfolio for $1.5 billion recently to two investment banker firms. 8. Commissioner Castillo: Commissioner Castillo reported that The Lab is hosting a live music event on Center Street Promenade on January 23 with different bands playing at different points on the street. C. Commissioner Deneau: No report. D. Commissioner Jabbar: Commissioner Jabbar reported that the West Anaheim Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony was held in Twila Reid Park in December with a good turnout. They are now beginning work th for the WAND Barbeque in May with the first meeting occurring on the 24. E. Chair Larsen: Chair Larsen shared a photograph of a Victory Garden during World War II at 607 and 611 North Lemon Street; she lives at 607 N. Lemon Street. Commissioner Castillo asked what has been happening with the Community Garden, and Chair Larsen said that a group is working on it and they and an incorporated neighborhood in Los Angeles County where the residents planted fruit trees and grape vines using money that was earmarked for public art. She also had an article from the Anaheim Bulletin about the Heritage Forum, and she noted there are no offers on the property at this time. Chair Larsen inquired of Janis if she could ask the PIO to issue press releases for the gallery shows; Janis said that she will send them up for their consideration. F. Vice-Chair Maya: Vice-Chair Maya was absent. G. Commissioner Roditis: Commissioner Roditis suggested combining Memorial Day and the Marine Corps Birthday perhaps showing artwork created by veterans. Commissioner Castillo stated that Carol Latham with the Arts Council has been trying to do something with a Veterans Day celebration, so she suggested that he contact her; Chair Larsen provided contact information to Commissioner Roditis. H. Staff: Janis invited Commissioners to save Wednesday, March 20, for the annual City of Anaheim Recognition Luncheon to honor volunteers for their service. She also distributed calendars provided by the Anaheim Historical Society to the Commissioners. She reported that the Parks Division chose Katherine England to do public art for the new park near Paul Revere Elementary School; it will most likely be a mosaic mural with assistance from the school children. Pamela Galera will come to a commission meeting for their input and approval, and they will be invited to the unveiling as well. Chair Larsen asked whether there was any word on the grants the commission applied for; Janis stated that Janis noted that she was waiting to send the second memo to City Council until the new members were on board, so she will forward that through Terry Lowe and let them know when it has been forwarded to City Council. Jane Newel in the last week of January. She received notice that they will be receiving CDBG funds to pay for a new roof for the Woelke-Stoffel house, and they will return it to its original appearance. She noted that the National Registry applications for both houses were submitted in November and they expect to hear back from them soon. Jane also reported that she added the Mills Act contracts to her program this past year and nine contracts have been approved by the County to date. Chair Larsen mentioned that she has been invited to attend a meeting at the Muzeo to discuss the direction they want the Carnegie Library building to go in. Thursday, February 21, 2013, 9.
