1. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission was called to order by Chair
Larsen at 6:49 p.m.
2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: Anaheim City School Board Member Al Jabbar reported that he has been
visiting district schools and noticing the great art that they are producing. He would like to see if some work
could be displayed at the Center Gallery at some point. Janis noted that the debut show in the gallery was a
collection from the Anaheim Union
through the schools and district would be a good way to choose which art to display. Vice-Chair Maya
suggested that the Commission could come up with an edgy theme/name for the show and commented that the
parents would come and awareness of the gallery would go up.
3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION:
4. CORRESPONDENCE: Janis shared an email from Sukhdeep Tracy Huang to the Cultural & Heritage
ness of Love and Lightyoga festival at the Business Expo
Center in Anaheim on May 11, 2013; she will forward the email to the Commissioners.
5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioner Deneau made a motion to approve the minutes for the January 17,
2013 meeting; Vice-Chair Maya made a second and the motion passed. Chair Larsen discussed the sentence
gallery opening in relation to ACE. Vice-Chair Maya noted that the next
installation in the Art Gallery will be on April 23 at 10:30 a.m. and they will explain to Mildred why they will have
her opening reception on a different date than ACE. Janis reported that the reception will occur immediately
nd
after the Arts Council meeting on May 2, which should equate to a very good turnout for her show. Vice-Chair
Maya suggested that he and Chair Larsen could attend the Arts Council meeting with Mildred and introduce her
there and invite everyone to the opening. Commissioner Deneau suggested that the entertainment for the
opening should be in the front rather than the back corner because they are meant to attract people to the art.
Janis mentioned that they will do their best, keeping in mind that they need to keep walkways open and
dependent upon the weather that evening.
6. GALLERIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Vice-Chair Maya reported that he has a friend who is very involved in the
Vietnamese community. He let her know that he would like to see some Vietnamese artists apply to the Gallery,
so she invited him to the International Vietnamese Film Festival in Irvine. She introduced him to a couple of
artists and he is hoping they will submit an application for the Gallery. Commissioner Deneau also suggested
adding certain organizations to the mailing list, such as the Muslim Center on State College, and Vice-Chair
Maya said that in the interest of seeing diversity he has already reached out to them. Janis reminded the
Commissioners that it would soon be time to schedule the artists for 2014 and it is beneficial to select them
early in order to give them sufficient time to compile enough pieces to fill the gallery space. Janis asked if they
had seen any artists at ACE that may be good candidates for the gallery, and Vice-Chair Maya said some of
them had sufficient competency but not enough material to fill the gallery. Commissioner Romero volunteered
to look for artists at the next ACE.

7. ART FACILITIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Commissioner Deneau shared with the Commissioners his idea that the
Commission do some outreach to organized community groups, neighborhood associations, etc. Regarding his
request last month about visiting performing arts facilities, Janis reported that she received approval to schedule
some tours at local performing arts facilities. She suggested that the Commission should focus on how the
facilities are financed and the impact on their they should begin with Cerritos. She
also noted that the tours would need to be conducted Monday through Friday and she would be happy to
schedule that if they still wish to pursue it. The Commissioners agreed that they would like to go ahead with the
tour; Commissioner Deneau mentioned that he would like to bring City Council Members as well. Janis
suggested that the Commissioners visit two or three facilities first to determine which facility was most like the
one they would like to have in Anaheim and then invite city council members to a tour of just that one facility.
Vice-Chair Maya suggested that Janis set up a day and whichever commissioners are available can attend.
Janis will make the arrangements and contact Chair Larsen with the information.
