1. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission was called to order by Chair
Larsen at 6:31 p.m.
2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION:
3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Connor Traut, Civic Councilman from Ladera Ranch, explained
that his mentor, City Council Member Jordan Brandman, suggested that he could gain knowledge by attending
the Commission meeting.
4. CORRESPONDENCE: Janis distributed the monthly Anaheim Art Association newsletter to the Commission.
5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Vice-Chair Maya made a motion to approve the minutes for the April 11, 2013
meeting; Commissioner Deneau made a second and the motion passed.
6. GALLERIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Vice-Chair Maya reported that he and Chair Larsen met with a painting and
drawing teacher at Cal Poly Pomona named Ann Phuong and spoke with her about having a show at the Center
Gallery. She currently has a show at a gallery in Buena Park and does three-dimensional paintings in multi-
media, and she will be completing an application. Vice-
may be booked for February-March of 2014.
Vice-Chair Maya noted that the artist reception for Mildred Kouzel was very nice; she brought many artists with
her from Fullerton, and she read a moving poem that she had written. He commented that she is still very
active in her art and very creative. Janis noted that the timing of the reception to begin at the end of the Arts
Council meeting worked out nicely and helped bump up the attendance. Janis will check with Ryan to see the
number of applications that have been received to date, and she will do a press release to invite artists to apply.
Vice-Chair Maya asked for clarification regarding when the Anaheim Art Association or Arts Council will exhibit
in the Gallery. Janis stated it would be the Art Association in June or July, and the Arts Council only uses space
that might be available
7. ART FACILITIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Commissioner Deneau reviewed the steps the subcommittee has taken to
update City Council on the facilities in the City and what they feel should be done to make improvements. Janis
reported that she spoke with Alan Strickland from the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts about scheduling a
tour and to meet with the Executive Director to get operational information. He did tell her that they have
determined that they spent too much money on technology that they rarely use. He would prefer to meet on
Monday mornings, or if not Wednesday or Friday would be his second choice. She suggested either June 10 or
24 would work, and she will send an invitation out to all Commissioners. Commissioner Deneau asked if it
would be possible to invite Terry Lowe to attend as well, and Janis said she will inquire with him. Commissioner
Deneau asked if she received responses from any other facilities; Janis stated that she recommended starting
with Cerritos and then discussing the experience to determine how to proceed. Commissioner Deneau also
suggested that the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza might be a good facility to tour.

find any information and report back to the Commission.

Jane reported that on May 1 the State Historical Resources Commission approved the nominations of the
Woelke-Stoffel House and the Mother Colony House to the National Register and they expect to hear back
in mid-June that it has been added. The OC Register will be doing a story on the houses as well. Jane
also reported that the Historical Society has expressed an interest in a Plaque Program and Jane has been
steering them towards interpretive signs using visuals rather than bronze plaques. They are investigating
placing the first one to mark the center of the Colony located on the east side of the street from where the
s going to encourage them to use the Commission as a
focus group to weigh in on the design. She reported they are meeting with the architect for the roof project
on the Woelke-Stoffel House and she has received estimates for refinishing the woodwork in the parlor-
