1. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission was called to order by Chair Maya
at 6:32 p.m.
2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None.
3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None.
4. CORRESPONDENCE: Janis Heckel presented the Anaheim Art Association Newsletter.
5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioner Deneau made a motion to approve the minutes for the August 15,
2013 meeting; Commissioner Romero made a second and the motion passed.
6. NEW BUSINESS:
A. Commission Overview: Janis Heckel presented the newest Commissioners with the Cultural & Heritage
Commission informational binder. Janis discussed the responsibilities of the Commissioners and answered
questions regarding their role.
7. GALLERIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Commissioner Pettigrew reported the art show opening had a great turnout on

September 5. Janis Heckel and the Commissioners briefly discussed the success of the show opening.
Janis Heckel reported the subcommittee met September 19 at 6pm and reviewed the applications received to
date for the Center Gallery. The subcommittee approved the application submitted by Ann Fong and will
contact her regarding her exhibit. Janis reported that four applications for 2014 have been received thus far:
California Ocean and Coastal Amateur Photography Contest, and artists Aziz Golkarzarde, Subodh
Maheshwari, and Razieh Mehdizadeh. The subcommittee is also considering a joint exhibit by Commissioners
Kelly Castillo and Brad Pettigrew.
Janis Heckel and the Commissioners discussed the boundaries of the Commission and clarified what the
Commission can do relative to their role as an advisory body to City Council.
8. ART FACILITIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Commissioner Deneau reported that the subcommittee is working on
recommendations for future art facilities.
Commissioner Deneau reported the subcommittee went on a field trip to the Cerritos Center for Performing Arts.
Janis Heckel reported the information learned on the field trip which included the number of seats, amount of
time to turn the facility into a different setup, number of staff and ticket revenue. The art facility was part of the
City of Cerritos’ grand plan to have shopping, hotels, etc.

9. INFORMATION ITEMS:
A. Vice-Chair Castillo: Vice-Chair Castillo reported the German Christmas Boutique is coming up.
B. Commissioner Deneau: No report.
C. Chair Maya: Chair Maya reported he attended the EID festival and the social at the Woelke-Stoffel

House/Founders’ Park on September 14.
D. Commissioner Pettigrew: Commissioner Pettigrew reported the Packing House won the 2013 California
Preservation Award. Commissioner Pettigrew attended the Historic Preservation Committee Meeting on

September 18.
E. Commissioner Roditis: None.
: Commissioner Rodriguez reported he met with the Mariachi Academy and that

60 student volunteers will be helping at the Anaheim Mariachi Festival on October 12.
H. Commissioner Romero: No report.
I. Staff: Janis Heckel reported the following:

1. Reception for the Surface Art Association at the Center Gallery on October 12.
2. The City’s Public Information Officer (PIO) provided a list of local newspaper contacts to which art

show opening invitations may be sent. PIO also sent out a Press Release for the September 5 art
opening.
3. Staff is working on a Center Gallery ad for the Activity Guide.
4. Staff is working on the website link for the Center Gallery.

5. The Fab Four Concert will be at Pearson Park Amphitheater on September 28. An audience survey
will be passed out at this concert for feedback to help plan future seasons.
Jane Newell reported the following:

1. Founders’ Park Open House was held on September 7.
2. The Woelke-Stoffel House roof project had a bid opening on September 19; six bids were received
with three under-bid. The contract is scheduled to be awarded on October 8 and is scheduled to begin

on October 21.
3. The Virtual Tour project is almost complete.

4. The Mills Act Program is winding down and final inspections will be held the week of September 23.

Anaheim Community Center, 250 E. Center Street, Anaheim.
