CALL TO ORDER -The agenda having been posted at11:00 a.m. onJanuary 7, 2014, the regular meeting of the
Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to orderbyChair Crawfordat 6:30p.m.
PRESENT:Carolyn Bryant, Laurie Crawford, David Robert “D.R.” Heywood, Linell Mathisen,Stan Oftelie

GUESTS:Betsy Kasten, Friends of the Canyon Hills Library, Helen Carter, Friends of the Anaheim Public
Library.
I.INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS:
A.FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: Helen Carter reported that the Book
Nookpulls in a little over $1,000a month. The Friends continue to need donations of books and
magazines. The Friends had their budget meeting and increased the amount allotted to the Ponderosa
Joint-Use Libraryfrom $100 to $1,200.
B.FRIENDSOF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY REPORT: Betsy Kastenreported that their next
meeting will be held on January 16, and they will be honoring Louise Fry for her outstanding planning
and execution of their holiday luncheon.TheFriends of the Canyon Hills Library volunteers donated
approximately 1,300 hours and raised $26,000in 2013. They have two scheduled book sales, March 17-
22, 2014and June30-July 7, 2014.
C.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Mystery Authors’ Luncheon “A Time
to Thrill” will be held on April 6, 2014.They are currently planning a special event for teens and another
for adults.The Library Board agreed to personally sponsor the inside cover of the Anaheim Public
Library FoundationMystery Author’s Luncheon Program.Stan and D.R. recently met with Dr. June
Glenn, President to learn what the Foundation’s role is, etc.
D.UNSCHEDULEDORAL COMMUNICATION: None.
E.WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: Audrey shared letters from Acaciawood school
children thanking Jane for a tour and a letter from a patronthanking EmilianoSaxe for his instruction on
Introduction to Digital Devices.

Board approve the minutes of the December 9, 2013meeting as presented. M/S: LM/DR 5Ayes

A.LIBRARY METRICS:Joe Purtell presented reports on programming and patron count.The statistics
demonstrated that Anaheim Public Library does well in programming attendance and runs consistently
higher than the state average.

V.INFORMATION
A.CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT:
Preparation of the City’s 2014/15 budget has begun.
Heritage Services is in need of volunteers for Founders’ Park, particularly men.
The Library partnership with the Public UtilitiesDepartment is moving along. A draft of the free
coupon for LED light bulbs that will be sent to residents has been approved.
Project ACES (A Card for Every Student) is gaining momentum. Staff has processed library
computer cards for every student at Loara High School and Savannah High School which is over
5,000 students. Oxford Academy has requested to be the next.
The Library’s major initiative for next year will be to increasepatron count.
Staff has been approached by the Muckenthaler Center to offer Art Classes at our libraries.

C.LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: Governor Brown released his 14/15 budget which includes 3.3 million for
library broadband proposals.AnaheimPublicLibrary will not qualify as we already have broadband.

VII.MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The Board
recognized the architect who inspected the Mother Colony House and discovered the structural issue without
charging for his service.
VIII.BOARD ITEMS
DAVID ROBERT “D.R.” HEYWOOD–None.
STAN OFTELIE –Shared an article on libraries conducting programs on immigration and naturalization that
helps people holding green card study for the citizen test.
CAROLYN BRYANT, VICE CHAIR –Plans to schedule a Bookmobile ride-a-long after April. Carolyn
would like to see some programs for teens offered in East Anaheim.She also suggested putting posters on the
doors of the librariesadvertising programs.
LINELL MATHISEN –None.

IX.MISCELLANEOUS
A.NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be Monday, February 10, 2014, at the Sunkist Library.
