1. CALL TO ORDER: Vice-Chair Pettigrew called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission
to order at 6:49 p.m.
2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: No report

4. CORRESPONDENCE: Vice-Chair Pettigrew presented the newsletter from the Anaheim Art

Association and confirmed that all of them had received the invitation to the WAND 18 Annual

Anaheim Western Barbecue at Twila Reid Park on Saturday, May 10 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioner Deneau made a motion to approve the minutes for the
March 20, 2014 meeting; Commissioner Medrano made a second and the motion passed.
6. NEW BUSINESS: Commissioner Medrano presented two (2) assembly bills from the California
Legislature requesting funds for the Arts Council; SB 1432 from Senator Lieu requesting $25M from
the General Fund and AB 1662 from Assembly Member Ian Calderon requesting a substantial
amount allocated from the General Fund for the Arts Council. Commissioner Medrano made a
motion for these two items to be placed on the May agenda for discussion and action to support both
bills. Vice-Chair Pettigrew made a second and the motion passed.
7. GALLERIES SUB-COMMITTEE: Janis Heckel reported that the Commissioners should have
received invitations to the next Center Gallery Opening Reception by the California Coastal
Commission. They will be exhibiting their present and past coastal photography contest winners.

The reception will be held Thursday, May 1 and features entertainment by a harpist and
refreshments; representatives from the California Coastal Commission will attend.
8. ART FACILITIES SUB-COMMITTEE: No report
9. ARTIST IDENTIFICATION SUB-COMMITTEE: Vice-Chair Pettigrew reported that he googled QR
Code Generator is the actual application online; he typed in his name and the code changed; he then
scanned the screen and it displayed his name. Jane Newell noted that the placement of the QR will
be the most challenging, because we cannot place it on the artist work. Janis stated that the
commission should find out what type of material was used for the QR to address weather and graffiti
issues.

C. Commissioner Medrano: Commissioner Medrano reiterated the information on the assembly
bills.
D. Commissioner Pettigrew: Vice-Chair Pettigrew reported that he attended the Fashion Institute of
Design/Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles to see former Commissioner Christie Romero’s
Jewelry Exhibit “Artfully Adorned”; he stated that it is a very nice exhibit, and it will be there for six

months. It is located on the 2 floor and admission is free.

F. Commissioner Rodriguez: Absent
G. Commissioner Ruelas: Commissioner Ruelas reported that last week was the CABE (California
Association of Bilingual Educators) Conference and the student performance was wonderful with
different types of cultural dance; he also stated that they originally estimated that 3,600 educators
would be attending, but it was actually 4,200. He complimented the Anaheim Convention Center
as a great place for the conference and he hopes that the next conference can be there also.
H. Staff:
Janis reported on the follow-up to Vice-Chair Pettigrew’s request to publish art articles in the
Anaheim Magazine. An article will be featured in an upcoming issue with a specific content yet to
be determined.
Janis reported that she contacted Community Development staff regarding Chair Maya’s
statement about the disrepair of Buster’s Court and the loose bird house at Lemon/Center Street.
Community Development stated that Buster’s Court is under repair and the lights should be on
and that the Bird House will be checked to make sure it is secure.
Janis stated that she was contacted by the City Clerk’s office regarding the Cultural & Heritage
Commission web pages not being posted in the appropriate location on the city website and it
should be moved to the Community Services web page.
Janis presented the latest design for the housing project on the corner of Lincoln/Anaheim Blvd.,
and spoke with the Planning Department regarding public art being placed at the new project.
They stated that the redesign includes a clock tower, but no formal public art component. Once
the Planning Commission approves the project, a presentation by the developer will be scheduled
for the commission. Janis stated that Jim Wilson consulted on the project design and he has
worked on several Colony projects.

Janis informed the Commission that the ARCTIC Tour has been rescheduled for Friday, May 16
from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and to let her know who will be attending. Vice-Chair Pettigrew,
Commissioner Medrano and Commissioner Ruelas will attend.

Janis presented a post card for the Art Crawl Experience on Saturday, May 10, 2014, from 6:00
p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of May.
Jane Newell reported that she does not have a date for the Mills Act Plaque presentation nor for
the dedication of the National Registry Plaque at Farmers Park. Jane also reported that she saw
a television commercial for the Pearson Park Amphitheatre. Janis stated that it was an out-of-
state promoter who rented the theatre for one event last year who ran the ad.
Commissioner Ruelas stated that a few years ago he heard about the Pearson Park
Amphitheatre shade project and wondered if it was still being pursued. Janis stated that the
shade structure is a million dollar project and until the city gets grant money it will be on hold.
Janis reported that this is the time of the year when commissioners are regularly appointed;
Commissioner Deneau will be completing his second term and the City Clerk’s office is
advertising for this position and others. She suggested that commissioners could refer interested
parties to apply at the City Clerk’s Office before June.
