1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Maya called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order at 6:32
p.m.
2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: No report
3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: No report
4. CORRESPONDENCE: Chair Maya presented the newsletter from the Anaheim Art Association.
5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Medrano asks to amend the meeting minutes of April 17,
2014 with the correction of Bill 1662 is an Assembly Bill not a Senate Bill. With that amendment
Commissioner Medrano made a motion to approve the amended minutes of April 17, 2014; Vice-Chair
Pettigrew made a second as amended and the motion passed with five (5) ayes and one (1) abstention.
6. NEW BUSINESS: Commissioner Medrano gave a recap on the assembly bills and informed the commission
that Wylie Aitken is on the Arts Council. Commissioner Medrano made a motion for a letter of
recommendation sent to City Council regarding the Senate Bill and Assembly Bill from the California
Legislature requesting funds for the Arts Council; SB 1432 from Senator Lieu requesting $25M from the
General Fund, and AB 1662 from Assembly Member Ian Calderon requesting a substantial amount allocated
from the General Fund for the Arts Council. Commissioner Deneau made a second and the motion passed.
Chair Maya and Commissioner Deneau will research and outline their findings at the next meeting.
Commissioner Deneau reported that California is ranked number 48 behind Alaska for spending less money
on the Arts.
Chair Maya reported that the mockup for the ARTIC Public Art project has been revised three times; it is a
very contemporary piece of nature changing scenes. Public Works staff has some concerns with the piece
and wants to remove it. He also stated that the artist has reduced the fee substantially to complete the art
project. Chair Maya stated that he met with Mayor Tait and City Council members last week to request a
liaison to be assigned to mediate between the artist and Public Works. He recommended that the City
Council should always appoint a liaison when art projects are involved, and there should be a potential liaison
pool with compensation for the liaison. He further stated Commissioners should be kept in the loop in regards
to Public Art. Chair Maya and Commissioner Deneau will research and outline the proposed guidelines at the
next meeting.

7. GALLERIES SUB-COMMITTEE: No report
8. ART FACILITIES SUB-COMMITTEE: No report
9. ARTIST IDENTIFICATION SUB-COMMITTEE: Vice-Chair Pettigrew reported that he did not get the
information on the type of material the QR is made from, but wherever the photo of the art is placed the QR
code should be placed below the art. Janis stated that she will speak with Community Development about
the QR project; she also suggested that a sub-committee should be formed to research and get verbiage from
other cities that have the same concept.
10. INFORMATION ITEMS:
A. Commissioner Deneau: No report
B. Chair Maya: Chair Maya commented about the bird house that is located in front of the 118º restaurant
that is now working and stated that the person repairing the screens on the bird house is doing a great
job.
C. Commissioner Medrano: Commissioner Medrano reiterated the information on the Assembly Bill and
Senate Bill supporting funding for the arts and made a recommendation for a letter to be drafted for City
Council support.
D. Commissioner Pettigrew: No report
E. Commissioner Roditis: Absent
F. Commissioner Rodriguez: Commissioner Rodriguez reported that the April 2014 Dia del Niño Festival

was wonderful and that Mayor Tom Tait was in attendance. He also stated that on May 4 the CABE
meeting was at Commissioner Rodriguez’s home; Council Member Jordan Brandman attended along with

other dignitaries. Commissioner Rodriguez stated that on May 7 Shanna Lee hosted a fundraiser for
kids at her home and Council Members Lucille Kring and Kris Murray attended.
G. Commissioner Ruelas: Commissioner Ruelas reported that Anaheim High School hosted a performance
ofAida and, even though it was not performed in the Cook Auditorium, the smaller more intimate space
was perfect! He also stated that the show was sold out every night and they will be performing it at the
Segerstrom.
H. Staff:
Janis reported that the Anaheim Arts Council will be conducting their 22nd Annual Children’s Festival of

the Arts on Saturday, May 17 in Downtown Anaheim. Opening night at Pearson Park Amphitheatre’s
Family Series will feature special festivities including a walk down the red carpet, a limousine photo shoot,
and hand fans with the Pearson Park season schedule printed on it. Family shows are on Friday’s
th
beginning June 20 and a special Teen Show will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2014.
Jane Newell reported that at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, the HUD Action Plan
for fiscal year 2014/2015 was approved, which included Community Development Block Grant funds for
two Heritage Services projects: (1) $52,000 for the structural evaluation, rewiring, repairs, repainting of
the Mother Colony House, and (2) $40,963 for the continued restoration of the interior of the Woelke-
Stoffel House.

The MUZEO has a new program called “The Open Book Series,” free monthly readings by outstanding
local authors. They are scheduled on the third Thursday of each month, beginning at 6:00pm:

Jane reported that there will be a “Wet Plate Photography Day at Founders’ Park” on Saturday, June 7
from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Members of F/395 Photography will be making photographic tintypes of
anyone who wishes to get their portraits made. There will be no charge for the photographs, per Randy
Estudillo, a 13-year Anaheim resident and member of F/395 Photography. The event is planned to
celebrate the work of artists who practice wet plate colluding photography worldwide today.
Jane also stated that this photography process was created in 1851 by Frederick Scott Archer and was
used extensively in the late 1800's, right around the time Anaheim was prospering. The Anaheim Public
Library’s Anaheim Heritage Center has many tintypes and glass plates in the local history collection and
will have several on display at the event. Victorian style hats will be available for those wishing to create
an “authentic” old time portrait.

The Mills Act plaque presentation for the “Class of 2013” has been scheduled for the June 10 City
Council meeting.
