CALL TO ORDER: Chair Maya called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order at 6 :33 p.m. Chair Maya welcomed the guests present and asked for introductions. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: Michael Buss, President of the Anaheim Arts Council (AAC, reported that the AAC coordinated a presentation and discussion concerning new arts initiatives in the City of Anaheim at a luncheon held at the Anaheim White House on October 16 Mr. Buss shared that it was attended by close to 50 people including the City Manager, Mayor Pro Tern Murray, representatives from several school districts, business leaders and members of arts organizations. Mr. Buss gave an overview of the program that included creating a new Arts /Business Group, Parent Involvement, and Arts Advocacy, utilizing empty store fronts for art classes, more afterschool art classes and more performing arts spaces. Mr. Buss stated that the AAC would be hosting a booth at the Fall Festival on Saturday October 25 "', the Art Crawl Experience on Saturday November 8` and the Nutcracker Holiday Tree Lighting on Saturday, December 6 He also spoke about the "Sacred Arts Festival" which will be held on March 21, 2015. There will be ten (10) houses of worship on a Saturday tour to show how faith and art are intertwined and will include an evening concert. Nick Selvy, Owner of Swinglt Trapeze, shared with the Commission that the business had recently moved to Center Street in Downtown Anaheim. The school offers circus and acrobatic classes from professionals who love teaching you to swing from trapeze bars. With these lessons, you progress as time grows, learning how to do incredible tricks. Mr. Selvy and Adrian Reid, an instructor at Swinglt, performed a short gymnastic routine for the Commission and guest present. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 4. CORRESPONDENCE: Chair Maya presented the newsletter from the Anaheim Art Association. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Rodriguez made a motion to approve the minutes for the August 21, 2014 meeting; Commissioner Ruelas made a second and the motion passed with one abstention. 6. OLD BUSINESS: A. SB 1432 and AB 1662 Letter of Su ort: Janis reported that as of May 23` SB1432 was being held in committee and the hearing for AB 1662 had been cancelled at the request of the author. B. City. Public Arts Projects Chair Maya stated that he would research and prepare a draft to present at the next meeting. C. Summer Art Workshop Proposal Janis reported that she checked on the use of the Center Gallery funds in the Anaheim Community Foundation for an art booth at a special event and it did not meet the criteria for use. The funds are used to provide entertainment at the Center gallery Receptions, The Commission asked Janis to check on the fund balance and report back at the next meeting. Cultural and Heritage Commission October 16, 2014 Page 2 AGENDA ACTION TAKEN GALLERIES SUB - COMMITTEE: Janis stated that the next Center Gallery reception would be Saturday, November 8` and the installation is scheduled for November 3rd at 10 a.m. Commissioner Hamida asked who was sent invitations to the Gallery Receptions; Janis replied that the City Council, all Commissioners, the Arts Council Board and those who have joined the mailing list will receive them from the City. Additionally, City staff provides invitations to the artists to be distributed to their family and friends. Commissioner Hamida asked about social media and suggested sending invitations to art teachers. Chair Maya stated that there is a Center Gallery Facebook page, but we have had some challenges recently keeping it current. Commissioner Hamida offered to handle the postings and Chair Maya requested that City Staff send her the information to post. 8. ARTIST IDENTIFICATION SUB- COMMITTEE: Janis Heckel reported that she contacted Brad Hobson, Deputy Community Development Director, regarding having QR's done for the public art on Center Street Promenade. He really liked the idea and told Janis that he would add it to the list of improvements for the area. 9. INFORMATION ITEMS: Due to the lengthy presentations, Chair Maya asked the Commissioners to postpone their comments to the next meeting and only have staff report. The commissioners concurred. A. Commissioner Ruelas None. H. Staff Janis Heckel reported on the request from the Commissioners to investigate the possibility of a gallery in East Anaheim. Janis looked at various City facilities and the only one that had some wall space was the East Anaheim Branch library. Since the area was not really suited for the type of exhibits desired, Janis stated that the Community Services Department would try to incorporate Gallery space in a future facility in East Anaheim. Per the request of the Commission, staff has submitted an article on the Center Gallery to be included in the spring issue of the Anaheim magazine. The article will include the 2015 exhibit schedule. Janis informed the Commission that the Paul Revere Park dedication would be held on Saturday, November 22 and they would receive invitations. Commissioner Hamida asked if the Commission would be invited to the Grand opening of ARTIC. Janis stated that she would inquire and report back. Jane Newell reported School field trips for third grade students were starting on Friday, October 17` and were fully booked for Thursday and Friday mornings through February 2015, On Saturday, October 11`", Jane gave a special tour of the Woelke- Stoffel house to a family visiting from Arizona who are descendants of the Stoffel family. The next Open House is scheduled for Saturday, November 1" from 9:OOam- 12:00pm. 10, NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805 11. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Maya adjourned the meeting at 7:47 p.m.
