1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Maya called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order at
6:32 p.m. Janis Heckel introduced Larry Rosenberg, Executive Director of the Anaheim Ballet. Chair Maya
welcomed the guest.
2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None
3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Larry Rosenberg, Executive Director, gave a presentation on
the Anaheim Ballet and updated the Commission on their current projects. Mr. Rosenberg stated his son,
Evan, has created some very powerful videos of the company and uploaded them on YouTube. He stated
that the video is the first non-profit to have the # 1 video viewed in the world, by over 50 million people. The
He stated that the Anaheim Ballet has struggled to gain recognition here in Anaheim, but they are known
internationally for their outstanding dance program. Mr. Rosenberg shared the success of their program in
providing a positive, safe place for local children to learn ballet and be transformed by learning manners and
being treated with respect. -

they ever performed at the Tree Lighting. Mr. Rosenberg responded that they will be performing in the Tree
Lighting Ceremony this year and have participated every year. Mr. Rosenberg encouraged the Commission
to go online and search on You Tube and view any of their videos, there are about 150 of
them.
Chair Maya asked what the Commission could do for the Ballet. Mr. Rosenberg responded that support is
needed because it has been difficult for the Ballet to grow since there is no funding for dancers to be on
contract.
Janis Heckel stated that the next issue of Your Community/Tú Comunidad has a feature article on the
Anaheim Ballet and the Step-Up program.
4. CORRESPONDENCE:
Festival to be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015. Chair Maya shared an invitation from the West Anaheim

Neighborhood Development Council for the Commissioners to attend the 17 Annual Holiday Magic Tree
th
Lighting on Friday, December 5 at Twila Reid Park.
5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Medrano made a motion to approve the minutes for the
October 16, 2014 meeting; Commissioner Roditis made a second and the motion passed with two (2)
abstentions by Vice Chair Pettigrew and Commissioner Roditis.

6. OLD BUSINESS:
A. SB 1432 and AB 1662 Letter of Support: Janis Heckel reported that no progress had been made with
either piece of legislation. Commissioner Medrano reported that the Senate and Assembly were no
longer in session. Commissioner Medrano asked if the City Council had sent a letter of support per the
est. Ms. Heckel explained that City Staff typically does not follow-up on the
communication sent from the Commission and that it would be up to a Commissioner to either address
the City Council at a meeting or contact them directly.
B. City Public Arts Projects: Chair Maya stated that he would research and prepare a draft to present at the
next meeting.
7. GALLERIES SUB-COMMITTEE: Chair Maya thanked Commissioner Hamida for filling in for him and
introducing the artist at the last Center Gallery Reception in his absence. Commissioner Hamida stated that
the artist was humbled by the attendance at the reception.
Chair Maya further reported that the Gallery Sub-
review the current Artist Applications and selected three (3) for the 2015 exhibits. Chair Maya further noted
that another artist was still needed for 2015 and the application is available on-line. The three (3) that were
selected are Clara Joseph, a Botanical artist; William Galvez, who is a well-known South American painter;
and Zoe Stevens a commercial artist.
8. ARTIST IDENTIFICATION SUB-COMMITTEE: Chair Maya inquired why this item was still on the agenda.
Ms. Heckel stated that since Vice Chair Pettigrew was not at the last meeting and brought this item forward, it

9. INFORMATION ITEMS:
A. Commissioner Hamida: Commissioner Hamida presented an invitation she received via email from Nick

B. Chair Maya: Chair Maya stated that the current MUZEO exhibit, orks by California artists

commented that it is amazing and Vice Chair Pettigrew is one of the artists presenting in the exhibit, with
his favorite piece being a photo that Vice Chair Pettigrew took while serving in Korea.
C. Commissioner Medrano:

original families of Orange County were featured in the exhibit.
D. Vice Chair Pettigrew: Vice Chair Pettigrew commented that he was very proud to have his work
displayed in the MUZEO exhibit.
E. Commissioner Roditis: Commissioner Roditis reported that he thought the October Commission meeting
was canceled and that is why he was not present.
F. Commissioner Rodriguez: Absent.
G. Commissioner Ruelas: Absent.

H. Staff: Janis Heckel stated that the ARTIC Grand Opening was being held on Monday, December 8 and
all Commissioners should have received an evite to the event. Ms. Heckel shared that the Paul Revere
Park Dedication will be held in December and the Commission will be invited to attend. Ms. Heckel

Saturday, December 6 in Downtown Anaheim. Ms. Heckel reported a balance of $1,444.45 in the
Anaheim Community Foundation Center Gallery account as a follow-up to the Commissions inquiry last
month. This money is used for Center Gallery items and reception entertainment.
Commissioner Hamida inquired about using the funds or paying herself to advertise on the Center Gallery
Facebook page for $10 per month. The fee provides for promotion of the Center Gallery site to other
Facebook viewers with similar interests. Chair Maya asked for this item to be placed on the January
agenda and requested for staff to get more information on this item.
Jane Newell reported that she had provided items for a Bewitching exhibit at the Great Park in Irvine,
including Halloween Parade troph Ms. Newell stated that the Mother Colony House
would be tented for termites during the Thanksgiving Holidays and the Woelke-Stoffel House is being
decorated for the Holidays this coming Saturday. Vice Chair Pettigrew asked about the large branches
that fell off the tree recently. Ms. Newell responded that arborists are monitoring it.
10. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. at the
Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
