SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None 4. CORRESPONDENCE: None 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Roditis made a motion to approve the minutes for the April 16, 2015 meeting; Commissioner Adelekan made a second and the motion passed with no abstention. 6. OLD BUSINESS: A. City Public Arts Protects: Vice Chair Pettigrew asked about the proposed recommendation letter requesting that the Anaheim City Council appoint an artist liaison for any future public art projects. Janis reported that the letter was updated by Commissioner Roditis with commissioner input from the last meeting. Vice Chair Pettigrew asked if the Commissioners had read the letter and if there were any comments or questions. Commissioner Roditis asked what happens once the recommendation is approved and signed. Janis stated that the signed recommendation is sent to the City Council, she will notify the Commission at that time. Commissioner Roditis made a motion to approve the letter of recommendation: Commissioner Adelekan made a second and the motion passed with no abstentions. B. ARTIC Public Arts Opportunities: Janis updated the Commissioners on the approved display monitor inside ARTIC to promote Art & Culture in Anaheim. A 42" monitor has been purchased and will be installed by Public Works. Janis stated that she met with the Public Information staff to help develop the presentation that will be displayed. The suggestion from staff was that they should be able to do something seasonally as a power point instead of a video to make an easy transition on how information is displayed. Commissioner Roditis asked if a QR could be placed on the power point page for commuters that are interested and would like more information could phone scan it. Janis stated she will explore that option once the monitor is operational. 7. GALLERIES SUB -COMMITTEE: Vice Chair Pettigrew reported that the Center Gallery Reception held on Thursday, May 7`h for William Galvez exhibit was well attended and very nice. Vice Chair Pettigrew stated that he was told that there were two magazines that the Center Gallery was featured in. 8. INFORMATION ITEMS: A. Commissioner Adelekan: Commissioner Adelekan reported that she was invited to Commissioner Rodriquez's History class to give a presentation on the Civil War and Civil Rights Personalities. Commissioner Adelekan stated that it went so well that she returned to the class several times. The second time she invited others to the history class. She reported that the students agreed to enter an essay contest that was being sponsored, and choose their own civil rights personality to write about. Commissioner Adelekan stated that she observed the students' learning and sharing and were really excited about the task. She stated that a 15` prize of $100.00,2 nd prize of $50.00 and a 3rd prize of $25.00 would be presented. Commissioner Adelekan stated that Friday, May 22nd was the essay deadline. Commissioner Adelekan stated she was very impressed with the behavior, attitude and inquisitiveness of the students and she was honored to be involved. Commissioner Adelekan was also asked to be a judge for the Lions Club Anaheim Youth of the Year. She stated how Cultural and Heritage Commission 5/21/2015 Page 2 AGENDA ACTION TAKEN amazed she was that the students had to write essays, keep their grades up and provide at least 100 hours of community service. She noted that one youth had 400 community service hours. Commissioner Adelekan stated the students are interviewed by the judges and the winners are given an award at a City Council meeting. She announced that the ten finalists were culturally diverse and it was very inspiring. Commissioner Adelekan also mentioned the 601h Annual St. Anthony Claret Fiesta was held on May 16`h 171h and 18`h with bands, groups, traditional horse show and a pie, salsa and karaoke contest. She also reported that Mayor Tait attended. Commissioner Adelekan informed everyone that Friday, May 22"d, the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival begins and that the WAND Barbeque at Twila Reid Park held on Saturday, May 91h, was wonderful. She noted that the OCCCO Community Beacon Awards Gala was on Wednesday, May 201h B. Commissioner Hamida: Commissioner Hamida provided handouts and invited the Commissioners and staff to "World Refugee Day" being held on Saturday, June 13`h at Pearson Park Amphitheatre from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. There will be multi -cultural food, face painting, storytelling, cultural performances and music. She also stated that 80% of refugees are in Orange County, and are single adults with children over the age of eighteen. Commissioner Hamida stated that some of the refugees are pharmacist, doctors, professors and lawyers coming to this country and taking jobs as cabdrivers, customer service representatives, and janitors. She stated that the courage, contributions, and resiliency of the people are the reason for World Refugee Day. C. Chair Maya: Absent. D. Commissioner Roditis: Commissioner Roditis reported that he read an article regarding artists leaving New York and moving to Los Angeles to make it the new art and fashion center. He stated that many new galleries are opening up in Los Angeles also. E. Vice Chair Pettigrew: No report F. Commissioner Rodriguez: Commissioner Rodriguez stated his appreciation to Commissioner Adelekan for giving his classes presentations and how the kids are very excited about studying the civil war and the essay contest. Commissioner Rodriguez is going to have a foreign exchange student from France. G. Commissioner Medrano: Absent H. Staff: Janis Heckel reported that the Anaheim Arts Council hosted the Anaheim Children's Festival on Saturday, May 16`h, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Janis presented the new Summer Activity Guide and highlighted the cultural events being held this summer including Concerts in the Canyon at Ronald Reagan Park and the Summer Nights Under the Stars series at the Pearson Park Amphitheatre. Janis reported the first "Battle of the Bands," is being held this summer for Anaheim middle school and high school musicians. The deadline to enter the contest is Friday, May 22. She noted that the schools have been notified and if necessary they are prepared to extend the deadline date. Vice Chair Pettigrew asked if fliers were distributed. Janis shared that fliers were emailed to all Anaheim High Schools and city staff made calls to the music director at the schools. In addition, fliers were distributed to over 50 locations to promote the event. Janis stated that the event has been advertised in the newspaper, posted on Facebook and Twitter. Janis reported that Disneyland donated one -day park hopper tickets for the winning band and other gifts will be awarded for the runner-ups. Janis announced that Commissioner Medrano, whose term ends in June, has chosen not to serve a second term with the Cultural & Heritage Commission and Ms. Hema Patel has been appointed to his seat beginning in July. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805. 9.
