IV. AD HOC SUBCOMMITTEE REVIEW & REPORTS
Commissioner Dinwiddie reported the Cultural/Government Exchange
Subcommittee met to discuss the schedule of events planned for the 2015 Mito
Inbound Student Exchange. Commissioner Laurie Leonard and Erin Wahlen took
on the challenge to confirm everything. Commissioner Dinwiddie will put
together an official calendar. It's been decided that they will pair up the students
and because of that they have enough host families. A family that previously
hosted a student has requested to host the younger sister of that student.
Linda Newby also expressed interest to host a student this year. Everything is
moving along. As soon as Commissioner Dinwiddie receives the names of the
students, he will forward them to Commissioner Jackie Filbeck.
The next Sister City Commission meeting will be held on July 20, as previously
discussed and approved by the Commission.

It was decided that Commissioner Jeanne Tran and Debbie Juliani are going to
put together the Sayonara Dinner.
Erin Wahlen stated Commissioner Pepe Avila has items to include in the goody
bags for the students and wants to know the best way to get the items to
Commissioner Filbeck. Commissioner Filbeck responded she'd be happy to pick
up the items from his office and that she would like to have all the items for the
bags preferably two weeks before the students arrive.
The Fire Department is also putting together goody bags.
Commissioner Jeanne Tran reported the Marketing/Fundraising Subcommittee
met to discuss the brewery tour fundraising event. They found a company that
conducts brewery tours, but because of the high cost they charge, they decided to
plan it on their own. They are planning to have it on an early Saturday afternoon
in October. Debbie is reaching out to the Mayor to see if he would be willing to
be their special guest. They will arrange for a place to meet with Uber taxi
services. They are looking at three breweries Noble, Anaheim Brewery and
Bottle Logic. Commissioner Debbie Juliani is reaching out to a list of food trucks
that she works with to station at the second location. They figured each location
would have a theme. They would start with a tour of the Anaheim Brewery,
lunch at the second location and possibly a mini casino or silent auction at the
third location. The plan is to start marketing in early August. The goal is to have
a date set by the July 20 ASCC meeting.
A suggestion was made by Commissioner Leonard to have a celebrity bartender at
each location and for Mayor Tait to accompany the guests throughout the day.
Other celebrities could include Lou Correa, Tom Daly and Chief Bruegman.
Greg Garcia suggested involving as many of our elected officials as possible and
allowing them to have ownership of it to bring in more people to the event.
Chair Thorson reported on behalf of Commissioner Mark Lopez that the
Economic Development Subcommittee has been focusing on a government
relationship with the City of Pudong, China. They are still in the process. Based
on everything Chair Thorson has read and according to Sister Cities International,
whenever they get Mayor Tait and Pudong's highest government official in an
office together to sign the document, they become sister cities. So there is no
need to go through the built in steps.

Mayor Tait has agreed to go to Pudong and maybe it could be something that
could be open to other Council Members as well and make it a one delegation
visit late this year or early next, sign the document and get it done. She believes it
can be done in one visit.
For the Sister City Commission, it's wonderful to sign the document in China and
hopefully they can take a big delegation of government and business leaders. It
will be great brand building for ASCC and it helps build awareness of what the
Commission does and hopefully then it will make it easier to raise funds and get
host families.
The delegation visit could be timed with the Shanghai Disney resort opening year
and Disneyland's 60th anniversary celebration. Ideally, it would be following the
official Shanghai Disney Park opening ceremonies. Chances are the opening is
going to be early next year versus late this year. Chair Thorson will report back
as she receives updated park opening date information.
Greg Garcia added it will be a policy decision on how the City Council will want
to fund the trip, but he feels this Commission can debate it and come up with a
recommendation to the Council that would help them in making a determination.
Council should be informed if there is a strong recommendation from the body
that yes, one or two council members go and yes, the City should fund it.
The next step is for a letter to be sent on behalf of Mayor Tait stating all the
exchanges they have done and basically stating they are hoping to bring a
delegation of very important government and business leaders next year in order
to make the Sister City relationship official.
