1. CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Pettigrew called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order
at 6:34 p.m. and introductions were made for the new Commissioner Hema Patel.
2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None
3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None
4. CORRESPONDENCE: None
5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Roditis made a motion to approve the minutes for the
June 16, 2015 meeting; Commissioner Adelekan made a second and the motion passed with two abstentions
by Vice Chair Pettigrew and Commissioner Patel.
6. OLD BUSINESS:
A. City Public Arts Projects: Janis Heckel presented an updated recommendation letter requesting that the
Anaheim City Council appoint an artist liaison for any future public art projects as a paid position. Janis
reported that the letter was updated to make sure the Commissioners' entire signature was on the
recommendation before it was presented to the City Council. Janis stated that the recommendation will
be sent to City Council and a copy will be sent to the Commissioners.
B. ARTIC Public Arts Opportunities: Vice Chair Pettigrew asked if there were any new opportunities at the
ARTIC for public art to display. Janis reported that there were no new opportunities at the moment. She
stated that new vendors are moving into ARTIC; as it develops more opportunities could open in the
future. Janis updated Commissioner Patel of the monitor inside ARTIC to promote Art & Culture in
Anaheim. She also stated that the monitor looks great and the presentation will be operational soon.
Vice Chair Pettigrew stated that the large digital monitors would be a great place to advertise and display
art shows and ballets. Janis stated that she will find out if that is an option and report back to the
Commission.
C. Anaheim Fall Festival City Building Use: Vice Chair Pettigrew wanted to know if there was information
on the sale of the Fall Festival building. Janis stated that she was informed by City staff that they are not
being removed immediately and the Fall Festival Committee knew that the space was temporary. Vice
Chair Pettigrew inquired about space east of the Packing House that has a large banner. Janis stated that
there is City staff that works with the Fall Festival Committee and they facilitate their needs. Janis stated
that the City Staff and the Fall Festival Committee is aware of the situation and they are working together
to address the issue.

7. GALLERIES SUB -COMMITTEE: Vice Chair Pettigrew informed the Commission of the difficulties to schedule
the next Center Gallery exhibit. Several artists had been committed and have cancelled. Vice Chair
Pettigrew stated that he visited different venues for a new artist. He also stated that former Commissioner
Kelly Castillo closed her gallery last Saturday. Janis explained the procedure of selecting exhibits by the
Center Gallery Sub -Committee. Janis also stated that she brought the 2016 applications that the Commission
can review and provide their recommendations by the Sub -Committee. Selected artists will be announced at
the next meeting.
8. INFORMATION ITEMS:

B. Commissioner Adelekan: Commissioner Adelekan reported that she had the pleasure of meeting a
French Exchange Student who was being hosted by Commissioner Rodriguez and his family.
Commissioner Rodriguez visited the Anaheim Heritage Room Library where Jane Newell provided a
wonderful behind the scenes tour of the history of Anaheim and Disneyland. They also visited the
Packing house and Commissioner Adelekan provided the student with a "Visit Anaheim" tee-shirt.
Commissioner Adelekan provided a flier for the Induction Ceremony for the International Educators' Hall
of Fame being held on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the Church of Scientology of Orange County.
Commissioner Adelekan reported that because of Commissioner Rodriguez's extension of kindness,
allowing her and others to lecture and interact with his students who participated in the essay contest, the
winners received certificates at a City Council meeting. The winners also received certificates from U.S.
Representative Mimi Walters.

E. Vice Chair Pettigrew: Vice Chair Pettigrew noted that he had attended Kelly Castillo's last art showing at
her art gallery. The ACE Arts Crawl Experience was very well attended and there was dancing in the
streets and people were truly enjoying themselves. Vice Chair Pettigrew stated that Chair Chris Maya
had an exhibit at the Anaheim Brewery. He also mentioned that a friend displayed the 1 st Bible from St.
Catherine's Academy.
F. Commissioner Patel: No Report
G. Commissioner Rodriguez: Commissioner Rodriguez informed the Commission that he was the only
educator that hosted an exchange student. He stated that they visited several beaches and that the
student wanted to see and take a picture of Watts. The student was very open to different cultures and
learning about them.
H. Staff: Janis Heckel reported that the Pearson Park Amphitheatre had many great shows this summer and
the Family series will end tomorrow night with a free movie. Janis stated that the "Battle of the Bands"
contest was rescheduled due to rain and will be held next Saturday, August 29th at 7:00 pm; admission
will be $3.00. She stated that they received five applicants with three finalists selected. Janis stated that
the bands chosen were from Servite, Anaheim and Canyon High Schools. Janis also stated that the
judges will be President of the Anaheim Arts Council Reon Boydstun-Howard; the founder of the "Rock
Band Experience" Greg Daulton; and a celebrity judge, Sabrina Bryan from Disney's "Cheetah Girls" and
"Dancing with the Stars." Janis noted that the final concert of the year will be the "Fab Four" on
September 26th and it's the biggest event of the year at the Amphitheatre.
Janis stated that Vice Chair Pettigrew informed her that the "Pageant of the Masters" will start a major
remodeling project and will be replacing their shade sails. She noted that the City has wanted shade sails
at Pearson Park Amphitheatre for many years. Janis stated that she has reached out to the operations
manager and asked if the shade sails could be donated and is currently waiting for a response.

Jane Newell reported that she gave a tour to ten students from our sister city, Mito, Japan. Jane stated
that the tour consisted of the Anaheim Heritage Center, Muzeo exhibit, and the Carnegie building. Jane
noted that on August 26th the City is unveiling their newly designed website. She stated that the library's
website will be unveiling their first digital collection, featuring one of the city's Japanese -American
families. Jane asks that everyone access the site to make sure it is functioning properly; any feedback is
welcomed.
Jane stated that the July 18th event at the Ponderosa Library went really well. Parents and children
enjoyed themselves so much, along with staff and volunteers, that in January they have planned to have
the same program for the Haskett Library. She announced that Jim Wilson of Thirtieth Street Architects is
preparing the drawings and documents for the Mother Colony House restoration project, as well as the
shade project at Founders' Park. Jane stated when it's completed she will schedule a presentation for
the Commission.
Jane reported that this month has been very busy, with several significant donations, including St.
Catherine's first Bible. She also received a visit from a descendant of Dr. James Hovey Bullard, generally
known through a photograph of Dr. Bullard and his family bottling wine in Anaheim. Dr. Bullard married
one of Clementine Zimmerman Schmidt Langanburgers daughters, and was one of the earliest surgeons
in Anaheim. This gentleman has donated the journals and day books of Dr. Bullard. She also met with
descendants of Thomas Crawford, early newspaper publisher and founder of Anaheim's first orange
marmalade factory. The family has donated photographs, documents, and even a copy of the original
orange marmalade recipe.
