0 3,661 users of the library's mobile app in FY 14/15, a 7%
increase from FY 13/14.
0 Checkouts/downloads of eBooks were up approximately 80%.
We are very proud of the accomplishments of the Anaheim Public Library over
the past year, particularly the highlights below:
Staff is in the process of working with Public Works and Group 4 Architects to
move forward on the renovation of the Sunkist and Euclid branch libraries.
Thus far, we have collected public input in a variety of ways to ensure that the
needs of the community are met. At this time we have completed the
conceptual design phase and reviewed furniture and signage options. The
Grand Re -Openings are scheduled for May 2016.
The Anaheim Public Library has made great strides in implementing the City-
wide Teen Initiative. The library secured two grants totaling over $5,000 to
purchase teen books. We offered programs specifically for teens such as craft
workshops, self-esteem programs, poetry programs, Teen Councils, etc. Most
recently the Anaheim Public Library Foundation funded "Science,
Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics" (STEAM) programs for
teens at the Central Library. We work closely with the Anaheim City School
District and the Anaheim Union High School District to offer electronic
products such as career planning, test taking, college prep, language learning,
etc. We are also pleased to announce that Anaheim Public Library has been
selected to participate in the California State Library's Skills for Teen Parents
(STEP) project in FY 15/16.
The library is continuing "Project ACES". The "ACES" project (A Card for
Every Student) is a ground -breaking initiative between the Anaheim Public
Library and the Anaheim Union High School District. This project is being
streamlined allowing every student access to all Anaheim Public Library
electronic resources. There are approximately 31,000 students in the District.
To date, over 18,000 junior high and high school students have an Anaheim
Public Library card. The Anaheim Public Library eCard offers student the use
of free eBooks and online databases,
The Anaheim Public Library is pleased to partner with and offer support to the
elementary school district as well. We added 70,000 books that can be
searched by reader level per the school district's accelerated reader list. For
the second year in a row, we are partnering with the Ponderosa Elementary
School and the Altrusa Club to offer a Creative Writing Contest to the students
there.
The library continues to promote literacy, lifelong learning, and a love of
reading in a variety of ways. One of these ways is the addition of "Books on
the Go" at ARTIC, putting library books in the hands of commuters. Funding
in the amount of $77,500 was awarded by the California State Library as well
as additional funding from the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim and the
Anaheim Public Library Foundation. Also new this fiscal year, is that every
City of Anaheim employee is signed up for a library card at the employee
orientation allowing them access to all of the electronic resources the Anaheim
Public Library has to offer.
We are very proud of the results of the LED partnership between the Anaheim
Public Library and the Anaheim Public Utilities Department. Thanks to this
partnership, over 5,000 LED bulbs were given out at the Anaheim Public
Library branches. As a result of this partnership, Anaheim Public Library has
676 new library card holders.
In Fiscal Year 2015/16 we will continue:
e Expanding services to teens, offering after school STEAM programs,
and reaching out to pregnant teens and teens in juvenile hall.
• Our partnership with the school districts, offering Project "ACES," and
presenting after school arts education in partnership with The
Muckenthaler Center.
® A partnership between the library and the Anaheim Boys & Girls Club
that is being developed to offer programs to the youth at that site.
• Engaging the entire community by offering the first "Anaheim Reads"
in partnership with the Altrusa Club. The book chosen for "Anaheim
Reads" is "The Maltese Faleon. " This program will begin with an
opening reception on Saturday, January 30, from 4 p.m. — 6 p.m. at the
Central Library, We have asked Police Chief Raul Quezada to be the
guest speaker.
• Renovation of Euclid/Sunkist Branch Libraries.
The Library Board recommends that the collection size be increased. In FY
2014/15 collection size is 576,451 vs. FY 2010/11 when the collection size
651,316, this is an 11.5% decrease over the last five years. The Library Board
would also like to see an increase in funding to support and sustain library
materials.
The Library Board is very proud of the many accomplishments of the Anaheim
Public Library Fiscal Year 2014/15, particularly the partnerships they have
established to benefit the community. We look forward to the exciting
programs and services that are planned in Fiscal Year 2015/16.
