CALL TO ORDER: Chair Maya called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order at 6:45 p.m. and reminded the Commissioners of the importance of arriving on time for the meetings. 2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None 4. CORRESPONDENCE: Chair Maya read correspondence from the Anaheim Arts Council thanking the Commission for their support and announcing four new Directors for the coming year. Also, Chair Maya noted that the Anaheim Arts Council invited the Commission to renew their membership. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Roditis made a motion to approve the minutes for the May 21, 2015 meeting; Commissioner Hamida made a second and the motion passed with one abstention by Chair Maya. 6. OLD BUSINESS: A. City Public Arts Projects: Chair Maya asked if all the Commissioners had an opportunity to sign the letter of recommendation for the City Council. Janis stated that only the signatures of Commissioners Rodriguez and Medrano are needed. Janis will email them to see if they would like to sign the recommendation. B. ARTIC Public Arts Opportunities: Janis reported that the monitor was delivered today and will be installed next week at ARTIC. Janis stated that a graphic designer is preparing the video presentation that will include one QR code on the end slide directing the public to the City Cultural Arts web page per Commissioner Roditis' suggestion. Commissioner Hamida stated that she was expecting to have a public art exhibit like at the Center Gallery. Janis noted that, although that was the original request, no space to display public art is available at this time. Janis suggested that the Commission could continue to reach out to ARTIC as it develops and more opportunities could open in the future. Janis stated that the Commission will get to preview the presentation when it is completed. 7. GALLERIES SUB -COMMITTEE: Chair Maya reported on the current exhibit by William Galvez, "In Search of Light and Harmony." Chair Maya stated it received a lot of positive feedback and had a well -attended Opening Reception. He also inquired about the 2015 calendar and whether it was filled. Janis reported that the 2015 calendar is complete, and that applications will be presented to the Center Gallery Sub -Committee to do the selections for 2016 in the fall. William Galvez is scheduled to remove his exhibit next week and the Anaheim Art Association will be coming in for the next two months. 8. INFORMATION ITEMS: A. Chair Maya: Chair Maya reported on how Anaheim residents have made the Halloween Parade their own and created a wonderful event, however, the space that they are working in has been sold. Chair Maya wanted feedback on how to approach the City about providing another building as a commitment for the Halloween Parade. He wants the City to see this event as a valuable cultural enhancement to the City. Chair Maya spoke regarding a level of commitment from the City to house the floats and provide a place for the event preparation. Janis suggested that the Commission wait until more information is provided regarding this issue. Janis stated that she will contact Community Development and Community Services staff for information and provide it at the next Cultural & Heritage Commission Meeting. B. Commissioner Adelekan: Commissioner Adelekan apologized for being late due to a prior meeting commitment. Commissioner Adelekan invited the Commissioners to attend the Open House for the Youth on Cultural and Heritage Commission 6/18/2015 Page 2 I_Vrlv►l�L' -AVOID itell ►Mr_\:4=1► the Move's Educators' Legacy Museum and Learning Center on Saturday, June 20, 2015 and distributed flyers with the details. Commissioner Adelekan read a few of the essays from the contest that were received from the students in Commissioner Rodriguez's class. Commissioner Adelekan shared information on Vanessa Barragan, an artist who is in the process of creating an illustrative painting depicting the good deeds of several law enforcement and military personnel. She will select the educators in these fields who will also be inducted into the Youth on the Move International Educators' Hall of Fame this autumn. Ms. Barragan's goal is to depict positive deeds and actions through her art, and to exhibit her final product (a community art painting/collage) at various venues throughout Orange County — reminding everyone that the positive must be emphasized and out -shadow the negative deeds of so few personnel in these fields. Commissioner Adelekan stated that if the Commissioners knew outstanding humanitarian educators to honor, who are in the military or law enforcement, and have gone "above and beyond the call of duty," to please nominate them. C. Commissioner Hamida: Commissioner Hamida reported that the Community Services Department was very supportive of Refugee Day held at Pearson Park Amphitheatre. There were numerous cultural performances including Little Ethiopia to represent East Africa, an Iranian sitar player, a recording on human trafficking, a Palestinian Buddhist Impressionist and a Burmese Group. Commissioner Hamida noted that over 1,000 people attended the event. Commissioner Hamida stated that she will bring event pictures to the next meeting. Commissioner Hamida passed around an article of her profile that appeared in the Orange County Weekly called "Follow the Rida," and shared that there is an art history piece in the OC Weekly article about "Little Arabia" and the restaurants there that have beautiful murals on the walls. She stated Aleppo's has a mural of the Citadel that's located in Syria, and Sahara Falafel has a mural of Mecca on its wall. Commissioner Hamida stated these murals are wonderful pieces of public art that she would like to have acknowledged. D. Commissioner Roditis: No Report. E. Vice Chair Pettigrew: Absent F. Staff: Janis Heckel invited the Commissioners to Pearson Park Amphitheatre for opening night of Summer Nights Under the Stars featuring the Circo Etereo Circus Orange County Aerial Arts on Friday, June 19`h at 6:30 p.m. The following Friday, June 26`h will be a performance by Spellman's Magic at 6:30 p.m. Janis announced that the Nederlander's entertainment agreement to manage the Grove of Anaheim was approved by the City Council and included an amendment which allows Anaheim -based performing arts organizations to use the facility for up to five days annually at no rental cost. Janis also stated that Reon Boydstun-Howard was recently elected as the new President of the Anaheim Arts Council. Janis stated that, in the past, one Commissioner was either assigned to attend the Anaheim Arts Council meetings or the Commissioners rotated. Janis also shared information regarding the Anaheim Arts Council's "Art in Public Places" program and explained that they have recognized and acknowledged many mural pieces in Anaheim restaurants if Commissioner Hamida was interested in nominating the murals she noted. Jane Newell reported that the Open House in Founders' Park held in May that included old tintype photos received really nice coverage in the Bulletin. Jane also mentioned that they are making this an annual event for residents. Jane noted that they will not have the Open House in July because it falls on the 4`h of July holiday. She stated that on July 18`h the docents and other volunteers will be moving activities that are normally done at Founders' Park; such as washing clothes, making butter in full Victorian clothing, to the Ponderosa Library to conduct a program for the children there. Jane mentioned that she will schedule Jim Wilson to speak at an upcoming Commission Meeting about the Founders' Park projects. Commissioner Hamida announced she will not be at the July meeting. Chair Maya announced that Commissioner Medrano has been appointed to the Community Services Board and thanked him for his service 9.
