CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Pettigrew called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order at 6:36 p.m. 2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: Reon Boydstun-Howard, President of Anaheim Arts Council (AAC), reported that the AAC promotes "Art in Public Places" by conducting an annual recognition program. Reon provided a PowerPoint presentation of art that was recognized by the AAC this year. Art that is acknowledged must be located in the City of Anaheim and able to be viewed by the general public. The 2015 Art In Public Places recipients are: a. Anaheim Regional Medical Center: "Welcome to the Pillars of California Agricultural History" is a series of paintings featuring fruits and vegetables from different growers at a packaging center in North Orange County. b. Saint Antonio Del Padua Catholic Church: "Welcome to the Beauty of the Sanctuary." The facility features beautiful stained glass, statues and stunning architecture. c. Kaiser Permanente: "Welcome to the Tranquility of the Oncology Building." This new building in front of the new Kaiser Hospital on East La Palma Ave. features a beautiful lobby piece of art and the entire building is wrapped by a picture of trees. The area also has a "Healing Garden" alongside the building. d. ARTIC: "Welcome to the Grand ARTIC Station" (Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center) Recognized for the architecture and Reon provided slides from the start to the finish of the station as well as the colorful dome lights that come on in various patterns nightly. e. Paul Revere Park Mural: This mural received the Julie Mayer Award for the most outstanding art piece of the year! The mural was designed by artist Katherine England using drawings by children from Paul Revere School of animals they thought Paul Revere would see on his famous midnight ride. f. Bird Houses on Wilhelmina St: "Welcome to the Birdhouses" This home received an Honorable mention for the over 100 assorted birdhouses decoratively hung in a large tree on the property. Reon concluded with information on how to submit art in public places; each submission will be reviewed to ensure it was not acknowledged during a prior year. She noted that on December 3rd, the AAC will be conducting their General Membership Meeting at Founders Park at 6:30 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Narooma High School Choir from Australia and she invited the Commission to join them. Commissioner Adelekan asked if the artist has to be from the City of Anaheim. Reon stated that the artist does not have to be from Anaheim, but the art must be located within the City limits. Janis mentioned another major program the Anaheim Arts Council brings to the City is the annual "Children's Art Festival." Janis stated that this program is free and it is held in the month of May in downtown Anaheim. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Vice Chair Pettigrew asked if there were any unscheduled public communication. There was none. 4. CORRESPONDENCE: Janis provided each Commissioner with a postcard from the Chance Theater announcing two productions; "Anne of Green Gables" on November 27th— December 27th and the "Eight Reindeer Monologues" on December 4th — 20th. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Roditis made a motion to approve the minutes for the October 15, 2015 meeting; Commissioner Rodriguez made a second and the motion passed with no abstentions. 6. GALLERIES SUB -COMMITTEE: Vice Chair Pettigrew reported that he has visited several local galleries and exhibits seeking possible artists to show in the Center Gallery. Janis reminded the Gallery Sub -Committee that 2016 is booked with the exception of January & February. Janis asked the Commission to contact her if they know of any artist that should be considered for this exhibit opening. Janis also stated that staff has contacted Cal State Fullerton and Fullerton College for possible exhibits. Commissioner Hamida asked if an artist with special needs could submit an application. Janis responded that all artists are welcome to submit applications. Vice Chair Pettigrew asked Janis about the repair being done on the bird houses located on Center Street Promenade. Janis stated that she was copied on a memo to Brad Hobson from Chris Maya regarding this project, however she would need to follow-up to provide specific details. Vice Chair Pettigrew asked about the status of the ARTIC art work. Janis informed him that she will get an update for the Commission. Commissioner Hamida asked if there will be a ribbon cutting for the unveiling of the art at the ARTIC. Janis stated that some type of reception is usually held, however that will be determined when the piece is completed. 7. INFORMATION ITEMS: A. Chair Maya: Absent. B. Commissioner Adelekan: Commissioner Adelekan presented the program from the Induction Ceremony for the International Educators' Hall of Fame. She stated that there were people from all over the world honored. C. Commissioner Hamida: Commissioner Hamida reported that she attended the MUZEO exhibit "A Country called Syria" and enjoyed it. D. Commissioner Roditis: Commissioner Roditis asked about the possibility of taping an interview with the Center Gallery artists and posting them on the city website. Janis stated that if this is for a one-time event, it would depend on the availability of the city videographer, however the City did not have the resources to provide this service for every exhibit. Vice Chair Pettigrew asked if it were possible for one of the Commissioners' to video the event and have it posted to the website. Janis stated that she will research the request and report at the next meeting. E. Vice Chair Pettigrew: Vice Chair Pettigrew asked if the lighting issues in the showcases had been addressed. Janis informed the Commission that she will find out the options and bring the recommendations back to the Commission. F. Commissioner Patel: Absent. G. Commissioner Rodriquez: Commissioner Rodriguez asked Commissioner Hamida if the City was still supportive of helping refuges here in Anaheim. Commissioner Hamida stated that the City of Anaheim has no jurisdiction over the refugee; it is the State Department's decision. H. Staff: Janis Heckel distributed invitations to the Grand Opening of the Aquaponics Farm being held on Saturday, November 21St. Janis explained the concept of the renewable farm and provided detailed directions. Janis suggested that the Commission visit the Aquaponics Farm to observe the unique way it serves the community. Janis informed the Commission to mark their calendars for the 21St Annual Nutcracker Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Village in Downtown Anaheim, Saturday, December 5th. The tree lighting ceremony will be held at 5:45 p.m. Vice Chair Pettigrew reported that the MUZEO's new exhibit, King Tut "Wonderful Things from the Pharaoh's Tomb" is on display and a free solo exhibition by Marco Miranda is on display until January 3, 2016 in the Carnegie Gallery. Cultural and Heritage Commission 11/19/2015 Page 3 AGENDA ACTION TAKEN Janis provided an update on the Commission vacancy stating that the City Clerk's Office had received Chris Maya's resignation and the appointment of another Commissioner was scheduled for the December 12th City Council meeting. Vice Chair Pettigrew stated that he knows someone that is interested in the vacancy. Janis responded that interested residents should apply with the City Clerk's Office. Janis also stated that the City Council was notified two days ago of the vacancy and they received a list of about twelve applicants currently on file. Jane Newell provided a flier for the opening of the King Tut exhibit at the MUZEO. On November 8th, camel rides were provided to all attending the new show. Jane stated that the schools districts are lining up to see the exhibit. Jane reported that the Anaheim Public Library Foundation presented a screening of the Emmy Award- winning documentary "The Legacy of Heart Mountain," inspired by photographs taken by Anaheim resident Frank C. Hirahara while interned at the camp during World War II. Jane stated it was held at the Central Library and there were over 200 people with standing room only. Jane noted that the documentary was also in the LA Times on December 4th. Jane informed the Commission that the links that lead to the documentary are on the library's web page. Jane informed the Commission that on Saturday, November 21 st, staff and volunteers will be decorating Founder's Park from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and if anyone is interested they are welcome to come and help. Jane also mentioned that students are using Founders' Park as their hang-out during school hours and she wanted to get the Commissions input since damage has been done to the property. Jane stated that they sit on the wrap around porch at the Woelke-Stoffel House and they have tagged the house with graffiti and the sundial pedestal was broken in half. Staff suggested that Jane contact the Neighborhood Services Central District Team. Vice Chair Pettigrew made a motion to cancel the Commission Meeting scheduled for December 17, 2015; and Commissioner Adelekan seconded the motion; and the motion passed with 5 ayes and no abstentions. I. ADJOURNMENT: Vice Chair Pettigrew adjourned the meeting at 7:41 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
