AGENDA ACTION TAKEN
1. CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Pettigrew called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order
at 6:36 p.m.
2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None
3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None
4. CORRESPONDENCE: Janis stated that the Commission received invitations to the opening reception of
"Anaheim Reads" being held at the Central Library, January 30th at 4:00 p.m.
5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Roditis made a motion to approve the minutes for the
November 19, 2015 meeting; Commissioner Hamida made a second and the motion passed with no
abstentions.
6. NEW BUSINESS: Janis briefed the Commission on election procedure.
A. Nominations: Commissioner Roditis nominated Vice Chair Pettigrew for Chair and Commissioner
Pettigrew nominated Commissioner Hamida for Vice Chair
B. Election: Both nominations were approved with no abstentions.
7. GALLERIES SUB -COMMITTEE: Chair Pettigrew asked for an update on the Laguna Beach brochure with
potential artist listed for the Center Gallery. Janis stated she will bring the brochure to the next meeting.
Chair Pettigrew reported on the Opening Reception of James Hagerty's exhibit, "Earth Rising", that was held
on January 7th. He stated it was a wonderful show with a great reception; Commissioner Adelekan and
Rodriguez were in attendance.
Commissioner Roditis asked if more artists are needed for exhibits in the coming year. Janis replied that the
artists for 2016 have all been selected by the Gallery Subcommittee.
8. INFORMATION ITEMS:
A. Chair Pettigrew: No report
B. Commissioner Adelekan: Commissioner Adelekan presented information on artist Penni Rubin to
consider as a Center Gallery exhibitor for 2017. Commissioner Adelekan stated that Ms. Rubin is very
creative, charming and an educator. Commissioner Adelekan announced that the 36th Annual Orange
County Black History Month Parade & Faire will be held in Anaheim on Saturday, February 61h. There will
be food and entertainment with an expected attendance of 6,000 to 7,000 people.
C. Vice Chair Hamida: Vice Chair Hamida reported that she worked on a cultural art project called "An
Adventure to AI-Andalus" which is a series of public events leading to a big event in January 2017. Vice
Chair Hamida stated that the project will take visitors back to a time when Muslims ruled in Spain and
Portugal between 711 and 1492. Vice Chair Hamida reported that the history of the Arabs and Latinos
has many similarities and a lot of the Arabic language is in the Spanish language. Vice Chair Hamida
reported that the Orange County Register included a story of the project on December 29tH

E. Commissioner Patel: No report.
F. Commissioner Rodriguez: Commissioner Rodriguez reported that on January 18th, Martin Luther King
Day, he joined Anaheim High School students to participate in a walk to clean Lincoln Avenue, Sycamore
Street and Pearson Park. Commissioner Rodriguez stated that it was good to see the children from
different schools take pride in their neighborhoods to keep them clean which is a part of the Anaheim
Union High School Districts Servathon. Commissioner Hamida commented that the Servathon was
mentioned in the Orange County Register.
G. STAFF:
Janis Heckel: Janis provided follow-up on several items from the last meeting:
• The ARTIC public art piece is scheduled for a test installation of the lenticular lenses that will be
embedded in the grand staircase in the coming months. Janis stated that she would like to
arrange a tour for the Commission when this occurs.
• Janis reported that city staff is exploring options to install light into several of the Center Gallery
cases. Since most do not have electrical outlets, temporary lighting is being considered for use
during gallery events.
• Janis stated that the appointment of a Commissioner to fill the vacant position has been
postponed to the Tuesday, January 26th City Council meeting.
Janis informed the Commission to contact her, prior to the agenda being posted, in order to place items
on the agenda for information and/or discussion. Janis shared examples of topics that past Commissions
had addressed including assigning a liaison to the Anaheim Arts Council to provide monthly updates, Art
Facilities Inventory and Need Report, and QR Codes for Public Art in Anaheim. Janis noted that the
Commissioners could each take an assignment and report information monthly.
Vice Chair Hamida presented a proposal for the Cultural and Heritage Commission to present certificates
of recognition to artists that display in the Center Gallery and/or other Anaheim projects. Janis stated that
staff will research the possibility and report back to the commission.
Commissioner Adelekan reported that she attended the Aquaponics Farm Open House and spoke with
Aaron Flora and his staff. Commissioner Adelekan stated that she brought Anaheim High School
students to volunteer for four (4) hours which was a great opportunity. She also reported that Anaheim
High School is presenting the "the King and I" this coming weekend. Commissioner Adelekan also
attended the Arts Council Meeting.
Jane Newell: Jane provided additional information regarding "Anaheim Reads". Adults are reading the
Maltese Falcon and children are reading the Malted Falcon. Jane stated that they would like to take
Founders Park hands-on activities on the road to other school districts due to not all schools having the
opportunity to visit the historic site. Jane reported that they have visited Ponderosa Park and she
provided pictures of the docents and the children at the Haskett Library on Saturday, January 16, 2016.
Jane also invited the Commission to the "Open Book Series" featuring writer Grant Hier, author of
Untended Garden a book of poetry. Mr. Hier used one of the City's photos in his book; Jane noted that in
his dedication he stated that he received his first library card from the Haskett Library when it first opened.
Jane reported that she was photographed for an article in the March issue of the Orange Coast Magazine
on "Archives in Orange County."
H. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Pettigrew adjourned the meeting at 7:30 p.m.
