98-032RESOLUTION NO. 98R - 32 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF A/qAHEIM IN SUPPORT OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REGIONAL P~AIL AUTHORITY FUNDING REQUESTS TO THE CALIFORNIA TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION IN 1998. WHEREAS, Metrolink, the passenger rail system operated by the Southern California Regional Rail Authority, began operation on October 26, 1992 with 24 daily trains serving 11 stations on three lines; and, WHEREAS, Metrolink has added on average a new train station and 10 miles of railroad line every two months of its existence and today carries over 27,000 riders between 46 stations along 416 miles of track in the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, and San Diego; and, WHEREAS, Metrolink provides a convenient means of transportation for residents throughout the region, reduces gridlock, improves air quality; and, WHEREAS, Metrolink removes more than 15,250 automobile trips per day and 8.5 percent of freeway traffic on parallel highways; and, WHEREAS, Metrolink continues to support comprehensive rail feeder services at all commuter rail stations to provide a multi- modal and seamless transportation system for the region; and, WHEREAS, additional funding is necessary to continue the rapid expansion of the system to meet the needs of current and future passengers; and, WHEREAS, Chapter 622, Laws of 1997, restructured the funding of transportation projects and created the Interregional 10% Program and the Regional Choice Program; and, WHEREAS, Metrolink is asking that a request for funding of the purchase of 30 additional commuter passenger cars and 5 locomotives be considered under the 10% Interregional Choice Program. NOW THEREPORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the City,Council of the City of Anaheim supports the request of Metrolink to consider additional commuter passenger cars and locomotives for funding from the 10% Interregional Choice Program.
