Services Superintendent Jane Newell, Heritage Services Manager Eleanor Granflor, Senior Secretary AGENDA ACTION TAKEN 1. CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Roditis called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order at 6:31 p.m. 2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Commissioner Adelekan introduced a guest in attendance, Patrika Jamal. 4. CORRESPONDENCE: None. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Rodriguez made a motion to approve the April 21, 2016 meeting minutes; Commissioner Adelekan seconded the motion. Motion passed. 6. NEW BUSINESS: A. Poet Laureate: Janis Heckel distributed a copy of the Cultural and Heritage Commission letter supporting the creation of an Anaheim Poet Laureate that was sent to the City Council. Janis reported that Carol Latham recently spoke at the City Council meeting regarding the establishment of an Anaheim Poet Laureate. 7. OLD BUSINESS: A. Arts Council Meetings: Janis Heckel reported on the last Anaheim Arts Council meeting which was held at the Anaheim Ballet and included the announcement of the 2016 Anaheim Arts Council Grant recipients. Janis Heckel also announced that Michael Buss has been elected president for the 2016/2017 year. B. Public Art Projects: 1. Skate Park at Ponderosa Park — Janis Heckel stated that the skate park is nearing completion and will include the mosaic designed and created by artist Katherine England, who attended the April Commission Meeting. The Commission will be invited to the dedication ceremony. 2. ARTIC — Janis Heckel reported that the project is taking longer than anticipated -because the artist is designing a slimmer framing piece and a system that can be removed easily for maintenance. 3. Olive Hills Dog Park — Janis Heckel reported that the dog park dedication will be held on August 6th and include the unveiling of the second K-9 dog monument. 8. GALLERIES SUB -COMMITTEE: Janis Heckel stated that the Anaheim Art Association will exhibit in the Center Gallery in July and August. Commissioner Adelekan: Commissioner Adelekan shared cultural information on the Investiture Services of her son, Dr.Tokunbo Adelekan, who was installed as the Senior Pastor at The Historic Tabernacle Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio. B. Commissioner Filbeck: Commissioner Filbeck requested to be notified of any event invitations by email. C. Vice Chair Hamida: Vice Chair Hamida reported on World Refugee Day held on June 4th at the Pearson Park Amphitheatre which shared a cultural showcase of refugees excelling in Orange County. Vice Chair Hamida reported that Arab -American Heritage month is in April and requested the City to recognize the various cultural months. Vice Chair Hamida requested that funding for murals be on the Commission agenda for discussion. D. Chair Pettigrew: Absent. E. Commissioner Roditis: None. F. Commissioner Rodriquez: None. G. STAFF: Janis Heckel: Janis Heckel reported the following: 1. Pearson Park Amphitheatre opening night is June 17th and shared the summer schedule. 2. Concerts in the Park will be held at Ronald Reagan Park on Thursdays July 14th — August 4th. 3. The Pearson Park and Canyon High pools will open for swim lessons on June 20th 4. The Disneyland Resort will be partnering with the Anaheim Community Foundation to thank Anaheim residents for supporting their 60th Anniversary by hosting free Disney movie nights at various parks, a Disney prize patrol vehicle will show up to City events to hand out treats, and provide Family Fun Days at five different parks to encourage family togetherness. 5. The Grand Re -Opening of Little People's Park will be held on July 9th at 10 am, invitations were sent to all commissioners. Jane Newell: Jane Newell reported the following: 1. The Founders' Park program "Hands -On History" is taking the program to the Canyon Hills Library for young people to experience history through various activities. 2. The Summer Reading Program will begin on June 20tH 3. The Anaheim Ducks will host and teach individuals how to play hockey at Central Library and two other branches this summer. 4. The "Books on the Go" vending machine is doing very well at ARTIC. 5. The Pronunciator Program is available online to teach different languages. 6. Gale Courses offered online are taught by college professors at no cost. 10.
