Euclid 5:00 p.m. Anaheim, CA 92802 CALL TO ORDER — The agenda having been posted at 11:00 a.m. on November 7, 2016, the regular meeting of the Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Heywood at 5:03 p.m. PRESENT: Linda Esping, David Robert "DR." Heywood, David Laviguer, Michelle Majewski, Stan Oftelie STAFF: Brent Dennis, Community Services Director, Audrey Lujan, City Librarian, Tasneem Watts, Principal Librarian, Jennifer Foxx, PT Senior Secretary GUESTS: Helen Carter and Diane Sargent, Friends of the Anaheim Public Library, Kris Lasher, Friends of the Canyon Hills Library, Ginny Gardner, Anaheim Public Library Foundation, Council Member Elect Stephen Faessel, Susan Faessel L INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: A. INTRODUCTION OF COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR, BRENT DENNIS: Recently appointment Community Services Director, Brent Dennis was introduced. B. FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The Friends annual meeting will be Monday, November 28, in the basement at Central Library. Patricia Thayer, a long-time member of the Orange County Chapter of Romance Writers of America will be the guest speaker. Patricia has written over 50 books, and has received numerous awards. She lives in Anaheim. Her sons actually worked at Central when they were younger. Librarians Tasneem Watts and Nissa Perez -Montoya attended the October Friend's meeting to thank the board for their support. A budget meeting is planned for December. 13, 2016. C. FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY REPORT: The Celebration of Larry Rushing's Life was hosted by FOCAL at the Library. They were honored to be recognized by Anaheim City Council on October 18th for Friends of the Library Week. At the meeting, highlights of FOCAL were shared including volunteer service which averaged 178 hours per month this past year, donation sale revenue in recent years, purchases for the Library by FOCAL, activities sponsored by FOCAL, and increased involvement of teens and young adults as Library volunteers. Their next FOCAL Book Sale will be December 5-10, 2016. FOCAL members presently include: 29 Lifetime members, 6 Business/Patron members, and 23 Active members for a total of 58 members. The next FOCAL Meeting will be held on November 17th, in the Canyon Hills Library MPR at 10:00 a.m. D. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Mystery Authors Luncheon will be March 19, 2017. The authors are Daryl Wood Gerber, Naomi Hirahara, and Sheila Lowe and the guest moderator will be Sue Ann Jaffarian. Tickets are $60 per person, $550 per table of 10. Reservations will be accepted as of January 2, 2017. Giving Tuesday is November 29, and the Foundation is encouraging the community to support the Library through the Anaheim Public Library Foundation and either directly or through Amazon Smile. E. IL APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 10, 2016 MEETING: MOTION: That the Board approve the minutes of the October 10, 2016 meeting as presented. M/S: SO/LE 5 Ayes. ELECTION OF CHAIR: MOTION: That the Library Board nominate and elect David Laviguer as Chair of the Library Board to a term of October 2017. M/S: DR/SO 5ayes B. ELECTION OF VICE CHAIR: MOTION: That the Library Board nominate and elect Stan Oftelie as Vice Chair of the Library Board to a term of October 2017. M/S: DL/LE 5ayes IV. NEW BUSINESS" A. WELCOME BACK LETTER: Audrey shared the Welcome Back Letter being sent to patrons who have not used their library card in two years. Incentives include free rentals for those who do not have outstanding library fines and an offer to negotiate fines for those who do. After the program the Board requested statistics on how many letters were sent out, how many patrons returned as result, and how many hours were spent following up on email addresses for those that bounce back. B. LIBRARY HOURS OF OPERATION: The City Council has asked the Library Board for recommendations for additional hours of operation for the Library. Preliminary recommendations were for Central to have Sunday hours. However, the Board requested financial information on opening Central Library for five and six hours on Sundays, Haskett for five and six hours on Sundays, Euclid Library for five or six hours on Saturday and Euclid Library for five or six hours on Saturday and Sunday for the next meeting prior to making their final recommendation. V. INFORMATION A. CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT: • Audrey thanked Stan Oftelie, Linda Esping, Joan Pettite, and Charlene Bowden for volunteering their time as judges for the Altrusa Creative Writing Contest at Ponderosa. • A draft MOU has been established between Anaheim Public Library and Anaheim Elementary School District for Project ACES. • Audrey thanked Michelle for her assistance with the ACES project in the Anaheim Union High School District. • The Haskett Library restriping project is scheduled for next fiscal year. B. BUDGET: Brent shared that one time funding priorities are a city-wide assessment for an updated strategic master plan for demographic needs, Bookmobile, and security cameras for park bathrooms. C. MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: A Board Member will attend the Library Division Holiday Meeting to thank the Library staff that assisted with the Euclid and Sunkist Libraries Renovation. Anaheim Public Library Board Meeting November 14, 2016 Page 3 VIII. BOARD ITEMS MICHELLE MAJEWSKL Spoke with Teresa Shimogawa regarding a memorial tree for Kenneth. She was very touched and would like to attend and bring her children, if and when something is scheduled. VICE CHAIR, STAN OFTELIE: Shared an article from the Los Angeles Times on why libraries are important and ways their importance can be emphasized during elections. Stan attended the Altrusa Creative Writing Contest Awards assembly and noted there were some very gifted writers. LINDA ESPING: Shared that the writing contest was a great experience. She attended the grand reopenings at Euclid and Sunkist Libraries. At the grand opening she discovered the architect for the project was her ninth grade student years ago. DAVID LAVIGUER: Thanked the Board for the opportunity to be Chair. He attended both grand reopnenings and appreciated the attendance of City Council Members and the support groups. CHAIR D.R. HEYWOOD: Attended the Sunkist Library Grand Reopening and enjoyed the children chanting "cut the ribbon." IX. MISCELLANEOUS A. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be December 12, 2016 at the Muzeo. B. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Heywood adjourned the meeting at 6:54 p.m.
