AGENDA ACTION TAKEN
1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Pettigrew called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order at
6:36 p.m. and introductions were made for new Commissioner Raymond Asad.
2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None.
3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Chair Pettigrew welcomed guest Patricia Henry to the
meeting.
4. CORRESPONDENCE: Janis Heckel reported that she was contacted by Anaheim GardenWalk Senior
Director of Marketing and Tourism Robin Weeks -Wynne regarding a new program called "Art on the Walk"
that will provide exhibit space to artists in open store fronts.
5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Adelekan made a motion to approve the July 21, 2016
meeting minutes; Commissioner Rodriguez seconded the motion. Motion passed with no abstention.
6. NEW BUSINESS: None.
7. OLD BUSINESS:
A. Arts Council Meetings: Janis Heckel reported that the first Anaheim Arts Council meeting of the year will
be held on Thursday, September 8, 2016 from 5:30 — 7:00 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community
Center. Commissioner Adelekan volunteered to attend and represent the Commission.
B. Public Art Projects:
1. ARTIC — Janis Heckel updated the Commissioners on the modular art installation that staff is still
waiting for the fabrication, installation and completion schedule from the artist.
2. Ponderosa Skate Park - Janis reported that the Ponderosa Skate Park Grand Opening was held
on Saturday, August 13th and included the unveiling of the mosaic art piece created by artist
Katherine England.
3. Olive Hills Dog Park - Janis reported that the bronze K-9 monument, created by Susan Bahary,
was unveiled on August 6th at the Olive Hills Dog Park Grand Opening.
C. Poet Laureate: Janis informed the Commission that staff will be researching programs and compiling a
recommendation for City Council.

8. GALLERIES SUB -COMMITTEE:
Chair Pettigrew reported that he reviewed the artist applications and selected five (5) for the 2017 Center
Gallery exhibit schedule. An overview of the Galleries Sub -Committee duties was provided for new
Commissioner Raymond Asad.
Chair Pettigrew asked if the new Murals and Art in Public Places sub -committees could be combined;
Commissioner Roditis stated that a Sub -Committee can only have a maximum of three (3) members due to
the Brown Act and combining them would not be feasible. Janis informed the commission that each Sub -
Committee should elect a chairperson at their initial meeting.
9. MURAL SUB -COMMITTEE:
Commissioner Roditis stated that the Mural Sub -Committee has not had a formal meeting yet, however
Commissioner Filbeck will be checking her contacts in Arizona regarding temporary mural programs. He
stated that once they receive the information, the Sub -Committee would determine specific recommendations.
10. ART IN PUBLIC PLACES SUB -COMMITTEE:
Commissioner Adelekan stated that she visited public art throughout the City and shared information on the
following sites: the Garden Walk is a great place for public art, the parking space opposite of the Packing
House has a large canvas of all types of people representing Anaheim, the Boys & Girls Club has a small
mural on the outside wall, Chase Bank on Harbor Boulevard has a mosaic art piece, and lastly the Law Firm
on Lincoln Avenue has beautiful art work. Commissioner Adelekan stated that she would be happy to provide
a 10 -minute presentation at the next Cultural & Heritage Commission meeting.
Chair Pettigrew reported that the City of Brea has an Art In Public Places committee that oversees a program
which requires developers of projects with a total building valuation of over $1.5 million to install an approved
publicly visible sculpture or contribute to Brea's Art Fund.
11. INFORMATION ITEMS:
A. Commissioner Adelekan:
Commissioner Adelekan requested that her statement "Where there's a will there's a way" be reflected in
the minutes.
B. Commissioner Asad:
Commissioner Asad questioned the main focus and scope of the Commission. Janis and Jane provided
an explanation of their roles as liaisons for the Cultural & Heritage Commission noting that the scope was
very broad including art, culture and history. Commissioner Asad stated that there isn't very much
German culture and history reflected in Anaheim; he asked if the commission could support efforts to
develop this area. Jane Newell provided information on Anaheim's early German history and the Phoenix
Club; she also provided information for research and guidance.
C. Commissioner Filbeck: Absent.
D. Vice Chair Hamida: Absent.
E. Chair Pettigrew:
Chair Pettigrew requested that Brad Hobson be invited to attend a future meeting to discuss the public art
QR code signs. Janis responded that she will contact Mr. Hobson and invite him.

Commissioner Roditis requested an update to his contact information on the Commission roster.
G. Commissioner Rodriauez:
Commissioner Rodriguez reported that he and his family enjoyed a wonderful time at the Pearson Park
Amphitheatre Beach Boys & the Eagles free concert held on Saturday, August 13tH
H. STAFF:
Janis Heckel: Janis Heckel reported the following:
a. The Pearson Park Amphitheater Summer Under the Stars series is coming to a close; the final
event will be a free movie tomorrow night August, 19th at 8:00 p.m. Janis also reported that
movie nights include backstage tours for children and they enjoy the dressing rooms and
technical equipment.
Janis reported that the second free concert will be a Latin Salsa band Bonko on Saturday, August
20th at 7:00 p.m. and that Pearson Park Amphitheatre will conclude their season with the
Fab Four Concert on Saturday, September 17th. She announced that Rhythmo will be
conducting the 11th Annual Anaheim Mariachi Festival on Saturday, October 15th in the
Amphitheatre.
b. Janis stated that the next Center Gallery exhibit will feature photographer Tom Lamb. The
Opening Reception will be held on Thursday, August 8th from 7 — 8:30 p.m.
Jane Newell: Jane Newell reported the following:
a. Jane reported that the Founders' Park capital project has gone out to bid. She noted that the
Mother Colony House has single wall construction and during the La Habra earthquake sustained
extensive damage. A plan to reinforce the walls has been prepared by architects; it also will
include a new roof, electrical wiring upgrade and a new fire and security alarm.
b. Jane noted that the shade project between the Carriage House and the Pump House is
necessary to alleviate the heat and make the area easier to program; the bids are due September
8th and this project will start in October.
c. Jane announced the Mills Act application process.
d. Jane stated that work is still being done on the Woelke-Stoffel House to complete new flooring in
the two back rooms and the next contractor will install wainscoting. Jane noted that the Historical
Society is donating $7,000 towards the renovation. Jane mentioned that the Historical Society
Board met in August and will be hosting an Ice Cream Social at Founders' Park on September
24th from 1:00 p.m. — 3:00 p.m.
e. Jane reported that she received an email from the grandson of M. Eugene Durfee, who designed
several buildings in the Downtown Anaheim area in the 1920's, with five (5) early 1940's
photographs attached. Jane stated that Durfee also designed the Pearson Park Amphitheatre
and the Kraemer Building. She will be working with him to try and identify the photos.
10. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Pettigrew adjourned the meeting at 7:25 p.m.
