CALL TO ORDER — The agenda having been posted at 11:00 a.m. on February 7, 2017, the regular meeting of the
Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Laviguer at 5:05 p.m.

L INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS:
A. FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The Book Nook and branch libraries
bring in a little over $1,000 monthly. Members have signed up for the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon
and for the Mystery Author's Luncheon. FOCAL was kind enough to send 59 boxes of books that came all
at once. Peter Fiorini and Terry Barker had their hands full unpacking them. Special thanks to Osvaldo
Sauceda and Adrian Bevan who unloaded lots of books, CDs and DVDs and took them to the Friends'
storage room.
B. FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY REPORT: The Friends of Canyon Hills enjoyed
celebrating The Big Read in February. FOCAL's Book Burning presentation was held on February 4t',
with Dr. Kai Evers providing a well -attended and thought-provoking lecture. Participants learned about
the history of book burning in Germany during the 1930s and 1940s, the historical basis for Fahrenheit
451. Dr. Evers currently is Literary Historian and Professor of German at University of California, Irvine.
A Chinese New Year celebration was held February 11th, in partnership with the North OC Chinese
School. Performance numbers included a parade with music, traditional Chinese dances, and a Kung Fu
demonstration. Following the performance, participants enjoyed a Chinese Lantern craft project and
Chinese dessert treats. Books and tapes in Chinese, which had been donated to FOCAL, were given to
guests to take home. The FOCAL Book Corner, Monthly Auction, and Glass Case of special items for sale
continue to be thriving enterprises, transforming generous donations from community members into
funding for Library endeavors. They appreciate being able to send many books to Central Library for use
in fund raising for other Library branches.
C. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Foundation is now accepting
reservations for the Mystery Authors Luncheon that will be held March 19, 2017. The Foundation will be
contributing $5,000 toward the funding of a replacement Bookmobile.
D. UNSCHEDULED ORAL COMMUNICATION: None.
E. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: Audrey shared letters to the Bookmobile from
children at the Danbrook stop.
IL APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE JANUARY 9, 2017 MEETING: MOTION: That the Board approve
the minutes of the January 9, 2017 meeting as presented. M/S: SOLE 3 Ayes.

III. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
A. WEEKEND HOURS: A discussion was held on the possibility of Sunday hours at the Central Library and
Saturday hours at the Euclid Library.
IV. NEW BUSINESS:
A. MINI BUDGET SESSION: Audrey shared the City's budget process. The Board requested to know if two
20 part-time employees would cost the same amount as one full-time. Audrey updated the Board on the
status of all capital projects.
B. LIBRARY BOARD TRAINING: David shared information on training that is available to Library Board
Members from California Public Library Advocates (CPLA).
V. INFORMATION
A. CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT:
• The Developer Fee Impact Fee Study is on hold pending locating additional funding.
• Project ACES for the Anaheim Elementary School District is on hiatus pending contracts with the
Placentia Library District that is part of a Consortium with Anaheim Public Library.
B. BUDGET: Discussed during min -budget session.
C. PUBLICITY: Audrey shared an article from the Anaheim Independent featuring the Big Read Kick Off
Event.
D. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: None.
VI. ACTIVITY REPORTS
A. STATISTICS: Staffwill be meeting with interested Board Members to refine statistical reports.
B. ACTIVITY REPORTS: None.
VII. MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The Board
discussed ways to recognize Jane Newell for all that she does. The Board also recognized Osvaldo Sauceda
and Adrian Bevan for assisting the Friends with the unloading of heavy boxes of books.
VIII. BOARD ITEMS
VICE CHAIR, STAN OFTELIE: Enjoyed the Book Burning presentation at Canyon Hills Library and noted
that it was well attended.
