AGENDA ACTION TAKEN
CALL TO ORDER: Chair Pettigrew called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order at
6:38 p.m.
2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: Janis Heckel introduced Michael Buss, President of the Anaheim Arts
Council. Michael Buss presented information about the Anaheim Arts Council which includes: the current
financials of the Arts Council; a new plan/makeover for the Arts Council; advocacy and arts resources; a
message for the schools to initiate art; art in public places; and scholarships. Michael Buss also reported the
Arts Council has partnered with Broadway Knights for a concert to benefit the Arts Council on February 18th
featuring singer, Brian Crum, an America's Got Talent Finalist.
Commssioner Adelekan questioned if there is awareness of any child artists. Michael Buss stated that the
Anaheim Union High School District has a student art exhibit every April. Brent Dennis stated children in the
community are involved with new park/playground design. Commission Asad also shared that County level
events are held every year and art is displayed at South Coast Plaza and the Orange County Fair.
3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None.
4. CORRESPONDENCE: Janis Heckel shared the West Anaheim Development Neighborhood Council (WAND)
invitation to the annual tree lighting on December 2nd
5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Roditis made a motion to approve the October 20, 2016
meeting minutes; Vice Chair Hamida seconded the motion. Motion passed.
6. NEW BUSINESS:
A. Orange County Symphony Tickets: Commissioner Roditis made a motion for the Commission to send a
recommendation to the City Council to support the purchase of subscriptions to the Orange County
Symphony to be distributed at their discretion. Commissioner Filbeck seconded the motion. The
Commission further discussed the motion and other cultural art organizations that may have ticket
subscriptions. Janis Heckel stated that the City of Anaheim's official organizations are: Chance Theater,
Anaheim Ballet, and the Orange County Symphony. The Commission requested for this item to be tabled
and reviewed at the next Commission meeting.
7. OLD BUSINESS:
A. Arts Council Meetings: Chair Pettigrew reported that he attended the last Anaheim Arts Council meeting
where Art in Public Places Recognition took place. Janis Heckel stated Living Traditions will perform at
the next meeting on December 1St and Commissioner Adelekan volunteered to attend.
B. Public Art Projects:
1. ARTIC — Janis Heckel reported the material for the grand staircase is scheduled to be delivered
in mid-December. The installation will begin in late January/early February 2017.
C. Poet Laureate: Janis Heckel reported the recommendation for a poet laureate program has been drafted.
It is currently being reviewed by the Community Services Director, and will then be forwarded to the City
Manager's office for review before it is presented to the Commission.

8. GALLERIES SUB -COMMITTEE: Chair Pettigrew reported that Michael Ward presented a beautiful show.
Commissioner Roditis requested that the gallery opening events be at a later time. The Commission further
discussed possible ways to promote the gallery opening events that included hanging banners and sharing
information on social media. Janis Heckel stated feedback will be discussed and that the Cultural Arts team
is brainstorming ideas to promote the event more.
9. MURALS SUB -COMMITTEE: Vice Chair Hamida reported the committee will meet in early December with
Janis Heckel. The committee will put together committee goals.
10. ART IN PUBLIC PLACES SUB -COMMITTEE: Chair Pettigrew reported the committee met today.
11. INFORMATION ITEMS:
A. Commissioner Adelekan: Commissioner Adelekan requested for more cultural art to be displayed in the
Center Gallery. Commissioner Adelekan recommended that multi -cultural art be shared that includes
vocal, people, evolving culture, and collaboration with other groups. Vice Chair Hamida recommended
that cultural groups perform at future Center Gallery openings. The Commission further discussed
possible cultural art ideas.
Commissioner Adelekan invited the Commission to attend the annual International Educators' Hall of
Fame and Youth Awards Ceremony on November 19t"
B. Commissioner Asad: None.
C. Commissioner Filbeck: Commissioner Filbeck reported she attended the Anaheim Fall Festival and
Halloween Parade. Commissioner Filbeck shared information about the Art Walk.
D. Vice Chair Hamida: None.
E. Chair Pettigrew: Chair Pettigrew reported that glass art is currently on exhibit at the MUZEO. A trains
exhibit is also featured.
F. Commissioner Roditis: None.
G. Commissioner Rodriquez: Absent.
H. STAFF:
Janis Heckel: Janis Heckel reported the Nutcracker Tree Lighting event will be held on Saturday,
December 3rd. Activities will begin at 11:00 a.m. and the tree lighting ceremony will begin at 6:00 p.m.
Jane Newell: Jane Newell reported two bids for the Mother Colony House project were received and
construction may begin in January 2017.
Vice Chair Hamida made a motion to cancel the Commission Meeting scheduled for December 15, 2016;
Commissioner Roditis seconded the motion, and the motion passed.
10. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Pettigrew adjourned the meeting at 7:51 p.m.

Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
