AGENDA ACTION TAKEN
1. CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Hamida called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order
at 6:39 p.m. The meeting began with a quick tour of the new MUZEO public art and the Carnegie Library
Building.
2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None.
3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Cloe Bernier and Faith Schweikert, representatives of the "Up
with People" organization presented information about their programs and upcoming benefit concert called
"The Journey" that will be held on March 25th at Anaheim High School.
Crystal Norman, Council Member Stephen Faessel's Policy Aide, introduced herself and is in attendance to
observe the Commission meeting.
4. CORRESPONDENCE: None.
5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Roditis made a motion to approve the February 16, 2017
meeting minutes; Commissioner Rodriguez seconded the motion. Motion passed.
6. OLD BUSINESS:
A. Arts Council Meetings: Janis Heckel attended the last Anaheim Arts Council meeting. Creative Identity
presented information about their program and had a performance by participants.
B. Public Art Projects: Janis Heckel reported she is working with Public Works on a dedication plaque for
the Grand Staircase at ARTIC. The Commission will be notified with any updates. The Ponderosa
Family Resource Center art proposal will be presented to the Commission before installation.
C. Poet Laureate: Brent Dennis presented and answered questions for the Poet Laureate Guidelines
regarding Anaheim residency, age, storytelling and oral tradition.
GALLERIES SUB -COMMITTEE: Commissioner Roditis reported he attended the opening reception on
March 2nd for artist, Kent Kahlen. The artist walked around the gallery and presented information about the
glass art pieces. Brent Dennis stated he will invite future artists to walk around and present a storyline of their
art at the Openings. Commissioner Asad questioned if past gallery artists have shared their success after
their exhibit and if any art pieces have been sold. Janis Heckel stated art pieces have been sold.
Commissioner Asad requested for staff to contact past artists for feedback regarding their exhibits held at the
Center Gallery. Janis Heckel stated staff will look into it. The next exhibit is a group of fibre artists and the
Opening will be held on May 5th
8. MURALS SUB -COMMITTEE: Vice Chair Hamida requested for the February 16, 2017 meeting minutes be
revised to remove the artist's name in the Murals Sub -Committee section. Commission Roditis made a
motion to rescind the previous approval, seconded by Commissioner Rodriguez. Motion passed.
Commissioner Roditis then made a motion to approve the February 16, 2017 meeting minutes as amended;
Commissioner Rodriguez seconded the motion. Motion passed.
Vice Chair Hamida stated the purpose of this sub -committee is to bring murals to Anaheim and revitalize the
City. Vice Chair Hamida received information regarding grants that were disbursed to artists to use for public

garage spaces in Santa Ana and the City of Santa Ana Planning Department approves the art mural projects.
The art mural projects program was recommended by the Cultural Arts Commission of Santa Ana.
Vice Chair Hamida requested information on public art murals in Anaheim. Janis Heckel stated there are
historic murals in City parks and will provide information at the next Commission meeting. Janis Heckel
reported that the Community Services Department driven art projects are designed with input provided by the
community. The Commission discussed the art projects that were completed at Ponderosa Skate Park, Paul
Revere Park and Miraloma Park. Vice Chair Hamida shared information on how the City of Santa Ana funds
art projects. Commissioner Adelekan requested a list of art projects that had community input to be provided
to the Commission. Commissioner Adelekan also questioned what the City's relationship is with the other art
organizations. Brent Dennis stated there is no formal relationship with other art organizations. Vice Chair
Hamida recommended to agendize the recommendation of an art mural project in Anaheim at the April
meeting.
9. ART IN PUBLIC PLACES SUB -COMMITTEE: Commissioner Asad stated information regarding art on utility
boxes will be presented to the Commission.
10. INFORMATION ITEMS:
A. Commissioner Adelekan: Commissioner Adelekan recommended the City host a Cultural and Heritage
Festival that can include clothing, performances, food, arts and more.
B. Commissioner Asad: Commissioner Asad questioned if there is a group working on the homeless issues
in the City. Vice Chair Hamida stated there is a task force in place. Brent Dennis stated the City website
has information addressing homelessness.
C. Vice Chair Hamida: Vice Chair Hamida reported that she led a Muslim event, "#IStandWithHijabis"
celebrating World Hijab Day. The event brought people together to show solidarity and encouraged
religious tolerance.
D. Chair Pettigrew: Absent.
E. Commissioner Roditis: Commissioner Roditis reported he attended the Anaheim Performing Arts Center
(APAC) meeting and shared information for the proposed facility. The proposed cost of the project is
$225 million. Commissioner Roditis attended the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on March 15th at the
City National Grove.
F. Commissioner Rodriquez: Commissioner Rodriguez will share information for the First Colony Bike-a-
Thon with the Commission. Information will be sent via e-mail.
G. STAFF:
Brent Dennis: Brent Dennis provided an update on the City's Boards and Commissions. The Boards and
Commissions have been invited to continue to attend meetings until the new ordinance is approved.
Janis Heckel: Janis Heckel provided volunteer pins to the Commissioners who were unable to attend the
Volunteer Recognition Luncheon and thanked the Commission for their service.
Jane Newell: Jane Newell shared that she met with the Historic Preservation staff regarding the
restoration of the White House Restaurant. Jane Newell also reported she started to meet with people for
the Mills Act Program and will continue to meet with them through July.
11. ADJOURNMENT: Vice Chair Hamida adjourned the meeting at 8:33 p.m.
NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown
Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
