A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ANAHEIM ADDING POLICY 2.2 TO THE CITY
COUNCIL POLICY MANUAL RELATING TO ESTABLISHING A
POET LAUREATE FOR THE CITY OF ANAHEIM
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Anaheim wishes to encourage and promote
cultural events, programs and services that benefit the residents of the City of Anaheim; and
WHEREAS, in furtherance of such, the City Council of the City of Anaheim wishes to
establish a Poet Laureate; and
WHEREAS, the goals of the Poet Laureate include inspiring Anaheim residents with the
transformative powers and beauty of poetry; provide City of Anaheim youth with opportunities
to engage in literary arts; and, to bring poetry to a variety of settings in the City of Anaheim; and
WHEREAS, the City Council accordingly desires to amend the City Council Policy
Manual to add Council Policy 2.2, entitled "Poet Laureate."
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:
Section 1. Policy No. 2.2 entitled "Poet Laureate" is hereby added to the City
Council Policy Manual as follows:
"It is the policy of the City Council to value and promote cultural events, programs and services
that benefit residents of the City of Anaheim. The Poet Laureate is a two-year uncompensated,
honorary appointment as the literary ambassador for the City of Anaheim. The goals of the
program are to: (1) inspire Anaheim residents with the transformative power and beauty of
poetry; (2) provide Anaheim youth with opportunities to engage in literary arts; and, (3) bring
poetry to a variety of settings in Anaheim, promoting cultural connections and partnership
opportunities.
A. ELIGIBILITY
1. In determining an individual's eligibility to apply for selection as the Poet Laureate, an
individual must meet the following criteria:
(a) The applicant must be a resident of Anaheim for at least 5 years.
(b) The applicant must be at least 21 years old.
(c) The applicant must have demonstrated a commitment to poetry through prior
publication.
(d) The applicant must have demonstrated experience and commitment to the spoken
word by giving public performances.
(e) The applicant must have demonstrated an ability to teach workshops and lead
collaborative community partner events.
B. APPLICATION PROCESS
Submissions for the Anaheim Poet Laureate will be solicited by an open call to the community.
An application for selection as Poet Laureate must be submitted no later than the stated
submission deadline. Application procedures described are administrative and may be modified
by the Director of Community Services, or designee, when appropriate.
1. Applicants must submit a completed application to the City of Anaheim. Applications
shall be made available online at: www.anaheim.net or hard copies available at the following
location: City of Anaheim, Community Services, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd., 4th Floor, Anaheim,
CA 92805. Applications may be submitted either electronically at www.anaheim.net or hard
copies may be received at the following location: City of Anaheim, Community Services, 200 S.
Anaheim Blvd., 4th Floor, Anaheim, CA 92805.
2. Applications must include:
(a) Application form completed with signature;
(b) Resume with contact information (limit 2 pages);
(c) Bibliography of published work (limit 2 pages) from a publishing house or press; not
self -published or vanity press;
(d) A personal statement (not to exceed 500 words) outlining program goals and
partnerships you want to pursue during your appointment;
(e) 2 professional references (not to exceed 300 words); and
(f) Selections from your published work (limit 5 pages).
3. Applications may be submitted any time before the stated deadline.
4. Applications that are not submitted electronically or physically by the application
deadline will be late and will not be considered.
5. Hard copies of applications delivered to the wrong City office will not be considered
unless re -delivery is made to the office specified before the application deadline.
6. It is the responsibility of the applicant to allow for sufficient time for their application to
be received by the Community Services Department before the application deadline. The
City will not be held responsible for failure of an Applicant to allow adequate time to
fully upload their electronic submission before the application deadline.
7. All applications submitted either electronically or via hard copy will be treated in a
confidential and secure manner.
8. All works submitted shall be considered copyrighted and may not be copied or duplicated
without the author's prior, written consent. All submission packages will be securely
destroyed and recycled and/or made available for applicants to pick up.
C. SELECTION PROCEDURE AND PROPOSAL ASSESSMENT
1. All applications will be reviewed by a selection panel chaired by a Cultural and Heritage
Commission member. The selection panel shall be comprised of the Cultural and Heritage
Commission member and four (4) members from any of the following organizations:
• Anaheim Arts Council board
• Anaheim Public Library board
• Any School District in the City of Anaheim
2. The selection panel will rank the applicants based on the selection criteria and the
submitted application.
3. Qualified selected applicants will be contacted and given the opportunity to make a
presentation to the selection panel. This presentation will include a performance of a poetry
selection by the applicant.
4. The Anaheim Cultural and Heritage Commission will approve the selection panel
recommendation and formally appoint the Poet Laureate.
5. The Poet Laureate appointment will be a two year appointment, .beginning in April of
each year.
D. DUTIES
As part of the appointment as Poet Laureate and literary ambassador for the City of
Anaheim, the Poet Laureate duties shall include, but not limited to, the following:
1. Provide no less than 2 free public workshops at Anaheim Public Libraries (one during
National Poetry Month in April).
2. Provide no less than 2 public readings of either original works created for these events or
past works appropriate to the occasion and audience.
3. Lead no less than 2 community -partnered events within Anaheim that are reviewed and
approved by the Cultural and Heritage Commission."
Section 2. This Resolution shall be effective immediately upon adoption.
