AGENDA ACTION TAKEN
1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Pettigrew called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order at
6:30 p.m.
2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None.
3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None.
4. CORRESPONDENCE: Chair Pettigrew shared the Anaheim Art Association April Newsletter with the
Commission.
5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Roditis made a motion to approve the March 16, 2017
meeting minutes; Commissioner Asad seconded the motion. Motion passed.
6. OLD BUSINESS:
A. Arts Council Meetings: The April Anaheim Arts Council meeting was held at the Anaheim Ballet. The
Anaheim Ballet outreach program information was presented and the dancers performed for the
attendees. The May meeting will be held on May 4th at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center.
The Children's Art Festival will be held at Pearson Park on May 20th and various art activities will be
provided for children at no cost.
B. Public Art Projects: Chair Pettigrew requested an update on the plaque for the grand staircase art at
ARTIC.
C. Poet Laureate: Janis Heckel stated the guidelines have been forwarded to the City Attorney for review.
7. GALLERIES SUB -COMMITTEE: Janis Heckel stated the next opening will be on May 5th for the new exhibit,
"Expressions in Fiber Art", provided by the group Beyond the Edge Fiber Artists.
8. MURALS SUB -COMMITTEE: Janis Heckel stated that three members of the Commission took a tour of the
Citrus Park murals. The City has contracted with the son of the artist, Emigdio Vasquez, to restore the
murals. A presentation on murals in City parks and facilities will be given at the next Commission meeting.
9. ART IN PUBLIC PLACES SUB -COMMITTEE: Chair Pettigrew stated the committee will put together a
presentation to make a recommendation to the City regarding utility box art.
Chair Pettigrew requested a status report on the QR signs for art in downtown Anaheim. Janis Heckel stated
the technology has passed the QR reader and the goal of Community Development is to incorporate more up
to date technology in signage.
10. INFORMATION ITEMS:
A. Commissioner Adelekan: Commissioner Adelekan asked Jane Newell to share the background and the
relationship between the Cultural and Heritage sections of the Commission. Jane Newell reported the
Advisory Board was established in 1954 and the main duty was to preserve and operate the Mother

Colony House. The Advisory Board was diminished in 2003 and at that time, the Cultural and Heritage
Commission was instituted.
Commissioner Adelekan presented demographic information of the cultural composition of the people
who live in Anaheim taken from the 2010 Decennial Census and the American Community Survey
responses between 2006 and 2015. The information shared was collated by City staff, Jane Newell,
Heritage Services Manager of the Community Services Department, and Charles Guiam, Assistant
Planner of the Planning and Building Department.
Commissioner Adelekan shared information on the definition of culture and heritage, and information on
the demographics of Anaheim. Commissioner Adelekan requested to agendize a possible cultural event
on the agenda for the May Commission meeting.
B. Commissioner Asad: None.
C. Vice Chair Hamida: Absent.
D. Chair Pettigrew: Chair Pettigrew reported Anaheim High School student art and photography exhibit will
be at the MUZEO. The artist reception will be held on April 17tH
E. Commissioner Roditis: Commissioner Roditis thanked the Commission and staff and stated it has been a
pleasure serving on the Commission.
F. Commissioner Rodriquez: Absent.
G. STAFF:
Jane Newell: Jane Newell reported the following:
• The "Dressing Dowtown: Changing Fashion for Changing Times" exhibit has been extended to May
14th. This includes the "Time for Tea" at the MUZEO.
• The Anaheim Historical Society Show and Tell program featuring "Ultra rare footage of the 1949
Anaheim Halloween Parade and the 1938 Anaheim Flood" on May 18ttat the MUZEO.
• The Anaheim Public Library will be celebrating National Poetry Month and will host a night of poetry,
"SIC Expression" on April 21 st
• East Anaheim Libraries are hosting "Tell Your Story" and are asking the community to share a family
story. A picture of an object of importance to your family can be submitted by June 17tH
• Jane Newell and Andy Alison will provide the Dr. Bullard interview presentation to the Orange County
Historical Society on May 11 to
• A PowerPoint presentation will be given on Early Anaheim at the Downtown Anaheim Senior Center
on April 22nd
• The Anaheim Heritage Center and the MUZEO buildings will be closed to the public from May 22nd -
June 2nd for carpet installation.
• The Class of 2016 Mills Act plaque presentation will be held at the May 16th City Council meeting.
Janis Heckel: Janis Heckel reported the following:
• The new art exhibit, "Expressions in Fiber Art" will be installed at the Center Gallery on Monday.
• Staff is holding the fundraising campaign for the Pearson Park Amphitheater Summer Season. There
will be nine weeks of family shows scheduled this summer that include cultural, music, dance, and
live entertainment.
Janis Heckel thanked the Commission for their service on the Cultural and Heritage Commission.
11. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Pettigrew adjourned the meeting at 7:08 p.m.

Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
