RES-2017-164RESOLUTION NO. 2017- 164 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM DESIGNATING THE CITY OF ANAHEIM AS A CITY OF KINDNESS AND AFFIRMING OUR COMMITMENT TO FOSTERING COMMUNITY AND BUILDING RESILIENCY THROUGH EVERYDAY ACTS OF KINDNESS. WHEREAS, kindness means doing something for someone else with no expectation of anything in return. Kindness is an action word. It's a word that can change a family, a neighborhood, a school, a city, a nation and, ultimately, our world; and WHEREAS, residents of the City of Anaheim have a long history of demonstrating kindness on a daily basis in their homes, schools, places of faith, businesses, community organizations and throughout their neighborhoods; and WHEREAS, kindness has the power to connect people and to build community. It is the mortar that connects the blocks that builds a city's social infrastructure; and WHEREAS, a community connected by acts of kindness is safer from crime and more prepared for an inevitable disaster, either natural or manmade; and WHEREAS, the City of Anaheim is the tenth largest city in California, has a population of 360,000 people, and is well established as a world-class destination that welcomes 25 million visitors annually to our city; and WHEREAS, the City of Anaheim is also a "Welcoming City", dedicated to ensuring that all of our residents feel welcome, safe and able to fully participate in, and contribute to our city's civic, economic and social life; and WHEREAS, inspired by Anaheim's kindness initiative, the students of the Anaheim Elementary School District completed 1 million acts of kindness. Additionally, last year the Orange County Department of Education embarked on a campaign encouraging students, educators and community members to reach a goal of registering 1 billion acts of kindness; and WHEREAS, in 2015, the Dalai Lama recognized the City of Anaheim's commitment to kindness and celebrated his 80th birthday in Anaheim in order to continue promoting compassion and kindness in our schools and in our communities; WHEREAS, in 2016, the United States Conference of Mayors, followed Anaheim's lead and unanimously passed a Resolution urging all cities, businesses and schools to achieve 100 billion acts of kindness. Cities around the country have since pledged to be a "City of Kindness", including cities in Orange County; and WHEREAS, in 2017, Mayor Tait was asked to present Anaheim's kindness initiative as part of a global summit sponsored by the Strong Cities Network, which is a global community of mayors, municipal -level policymakers and practitioners united in building social cohesion and community resilience to counter violent extremism; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council, that the City of Anaheim is officially designated a "City of Kindness" that is committed to promoting kindness as a core value and fostering a culture of being kind to one another; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Anaheim formally adopts "City of Kindness" as the City's official motto that will be used in our materials as appropriate; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Anaheim will initiate a new city employee "Kindness in Action" event as a means of actively affirming our commitment to kindness while also strengthening bonds between employees and the community we serve; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Anaheim will continue to implement programs that seek to change the culture of our city and encourage all employees and residents to embrace kindness; THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION is approved and adopted by the City Council of the City of Anaheim this 7th day of November , 2017, by the following roll call vote: AYES:Mayor Tait and Council Members Vanderbilt, Murray, Barnes, Moreno,Kring, and Faessel NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None ATTEST: CITY OF ANAHEIM -L r/76w� By: MA OR OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM C OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM (Acting) CLERK'S CERTIFICATE STATE OF CALIFORNIA ) COUNTY OF ORANGE ) ss.
