Santa Ana Canyon Rd. 5:00 p.m. Anaheim, CA 92808 CALL TO ORDER — The agenda having been posted on August 8, 2017 the regular meeting of the Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Laviguer at 5:01 p.m. PRESENT: Rose Chen David Laviguer, John Leos, Stan Oftelie ABSENT: Claudia Perez -Figueroa STAFF: Audrey Lujan, City Librarian, Jennifer Foxx, PT Senior Secretary, Joe Purtell, Supervising Librarian, Cynthia Hicks, Supervising Librarian GUESTS: Jeremy B. Yamaguchi, Placentia City Council Member, Helen Carter, Friends of the Anaheim Public Library L INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: A. FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The multi -media sale was held on August 5, 2017 and raised $279.00. Funds were less than expected as the elevator was not working during the sale. The Friends' annual meeting will be on September 25, 2017. Library staff will present on Social Media. Joe Purtell will attend the August 28, 2017 meeting to present on The Big Read. The Book Nook continues to do well. B. FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY REPORT: They recently completed a successful Big Beautiful Book Sale. Their next sale will be the Annual Fall Book Sale in mid-November. FOCAL continues to process generous donations from the community. Presently there is a large inventory of boxes ready to be sent to Central Library to benefit Friends of Anaheim Public Library. July book group visits to nearby Anaheim Hills senior residents bring the Library to them. Large print books purchased by FOCAL and other titles requested by residents are brought to them for circulation. FOCAL is looking forward to featuring "Into the Beautiful North" during weeks of The Big Read. C. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Anaheim Public Library Foundation met for their summer meeting on August 6, 2017. They are proud to support the following programs this year for the Anaheim Public Libraries: eBook collection - $20,000, adult book ccollection - $5,000, The Big Read - S1,500, teens - $6,000 for programming system wide and collection, Social Marketing 51,000 and adult/teen programming for all sites - $5,400. The Foundation is hosting "An Evening with poet Selma Mann" on September l lth from 6:00-7:30 p.m. She will read selected poems from her new book "Whimsical Warrior", aplayful tribute to aging with grace and laughter. D. UNSCHEDULED ORAL COMMUNICATION: Jeremy Yamaguchi, Placentia City Council Member introduced himself as an observer. The Placentia Library will be celebrating their Centennial soon. E. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: None. IL APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE JULY 10, 2017. The minutes were approved as presented. III. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: A. MEMORIAL TREE AT HASKETT FOR FORMER LIBRARY BOARD MEMBER KENNETH SHIMOGAWA: David will continue to work with the City of Anaheim and more information will be provided as it is received. Anaheim Public Library Board Meeting August 14, 2017 Page 2 B. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL ON THE CONDITION OF THE LIBRARIES FOR FISCAL 2016/17 PER ARTICLE IX. APPOINTIVE BOARDS AND COMISSIONS, SECTION 908: A discussion was held on recommended edits. The revised letter will be on the September Library Board Agenda. IV. NEW BUSINESS: A. THE BIG READ — "INTO THE BEAUTIFUL NORTH": Joe Purtell presented information on the next Big Read that will coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month. B. LIBRARY RULES OF CONDUCT: A discussion was held on the differences between the existing Library Rules of Conduct approved in 2004 and the draft presented. MOTION: THE CITY ATTORNEY'S OFFICE REVIEW THE LIBRARY RULES OF CONDUCT WITH THE LIBRARY BOARD'S REQUEST FOR CLARIFICATIONS. M/S: RC/JL — 4 ayes V. INFORMATION A. CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT: • Audrey updated the Board on the Heritage Services and the Central Green Space capital projects. • Audrey thanked John Leos for bringing forward the partnership between the Library and the Orange County Probation Office. • The Developer Impact Fees will be going to City Council for a workshop in September. B. BUDGET: None. C. PUBLICITY: None. D. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: None. VI. ACTIVITY REPORTS A. STATISTICS: Included in packet. B. ACTIVITY REPORTS: Included in packet. VII. MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: None. VIII. BOARD ITEMS MEMBER ROSE CHEN — Read the activity reports and was very impressed. She is looking forward to working more with the Library Board now that she is retired. MEMBER JOHN LEOS — The Library is partnering with the Orange County Probation office to provide library services to at -risk youth groups that are doing community services. The kick-off was held on July 28, 2017, with the Bookmobile visiting the Family Court building. The kids really enjoyed the event and some even got library cards. Every third Saturday of the month library staff will either visit or the groups will be brought to the Library to assist with programs, etc. VICE CHAIR, STAN OFTELIE: None.
