CALL TO ORDER — The agenda having been posted on November 7, 2017 the regular meeting of the Anaheim
Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Laviguer at 5:05 p.m.

L INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS:
A, FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The multi -media sale is Saturday,
December 2, 2017 at the Central Library. The Book Nook continues to bring in over a $1,000 a month
with help from East Anaheim, Euclid, and Haskett Libraries. New members are needed as they have an
aging Board. Audrey has introduced fundraising ideas to the Friends. The City Council gave
proclamations to the Friends of the Anaheim Public Library and the Friends of the Canyon Hills Library
for National Friends of the Library week. Donnations of books, magazines, DVDs, and CDs are always
needed.
B, FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY REPORT: They are conducting their Annual Fall Book
Sale and Christmas Boutique, November 13th-I8th. On Saturday, books will sell for $2.00 abag. On
October 5th, Young Adult Author Lilliam Rivera visited Canyon Hills Library for a book talk about her
debut novel, The Education of Margot Sanchez. Ms. Rivera's presentation built understanding of
authorship among our teenage and adult Library patrons by giving helpful strategies of ways to present
one's writing. She was recently named by the Los Angeles Times "A 2017 Face to Watch." On September
21, FOCAL officers for 2018 were elected: President Barbara Rosen, Vice President Cindy Guziak,
Secretary Karen Lockwood., Treasurer Berdella Smith, Membership Louise Fry, Book Selling Betsy
Kasten & Donna Clark,. The same committee chairpersons will remain in place, and a new position was
established: Administrative Support to Elected Officers Kris Lasher.
C. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Foundation was honored to present
$20,000 to the City Council in September in their continuing support of the eBook collection. The
Foundation has its theme and authors for the 23rd Annual Mystery Authors Luncheon for April 15th, 2018.
The theme is High Tide and Homicide and authors are D.P. Lyle, Patricia Smiley, Matt Coyle, and guest
moderator, author Robin Burcell. Please save the date. Just a reminder that the holidays are right around
the corner and the Foundation is hoping that if you use Amazon you will choose to order through Amazon
Smiles and choose the Anaheim Public Library Foundation as your charity of choice. The Foundation has
redesigned book bags that are being delivered to be sold at the libraries.
D. UNSCHEDULED ORAL COMMUNICATION: None.
E, WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: Audrey shared thank you notes from students from
Anaheim Elementary School District.

III. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
A. MEMORIAL TREE AT HASKETT FOR FORMER LIBRARY BOARD MEMBER KENNETH
SHIMOGAWA: David shared that the ceremony was held on October 19, 2017, with the family and most
of the current and former Library Board Members in attendance.
B. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL ON THE CONDITION OF THE
LIBRARIES FOR FISCAL 2016/17 PER ARTICLE IX. APPOINTIVE BOARDS AND COMISSIONS,
SECTION 908: MOTION: THAT THE LIBRARY BOARD APPROVE THE ANAEHIM PUBLIC
LIBRARY REPORT TO THE CITY COUNICL AS PRESENTED. M/S: JL/RC — 4 ayes
C. LIBRARY RULES OF CONDUCT: The City Attorney's Office is reviewing the possibility of having the
Rules of Conduct made into an Ordinance that will also apply to other Community Services facilities that
directly serve the public. Stan requested a quarterly report of incidents that involved police, ambulance,
etc.
IV. NEW BUSINESS:
A, SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING: Chloe Van Stralendorff presented the social media marketing strategies
and growth. Audrey thanked the Anaheim Public Library Foundation for funding the Library's social
media marketing initiative.
B. CITY COUNCIL POLICY — BOARD AND COMMISION STAFF WORK: Audrey shared the City
Council Policy regarding Board and Commission Staff Work.
C. CITY COUNCIL POLICY — POET LAUREATE: Joe Purtell shared the policy. Stan Oftelie volunteered
to serve on the selection committee as the Library Board representative.
V. INFORMATION
A. CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT:
• Audrey updated the Board on the Heritage Services, Central Green Space, and replacement Bookmobile
capital projects. CDBG funding has been approved for these projects and Bookmobile has community
funding in the amount of $20,000.
• The partnership between the Library and the Orange County Probation Office continues to be
successful.
• The Library is beginning a permanent loan program to get age appropriate books to kids in need to keep.
These books are obtained from First Book grants and the Library only pays the shipping costs, which is
covered by the Friends of the Anaheim Public Library so that no City funding is used.
• Audrey gave kudos to Joe Purtell for the NEA Big Read programming.
• The ACES MOU with the AESD has been signed and the students will be entered into the system in
December. Staff continues to reach out to school districts that serve Anaheim residents.
• Library staff Tasneem Watts and Tony Lam, along with the Anaheim Union High School District
Librarian Regina Powers, presented Anaheim Public Library's ACES program at the California Library
Association.
• The Developer Impact Fees are still under review by the City Council.
• The Library is working with Public Works to have the Haskett Library parking lot re -striped.

• The Mayor offered Library staff that work with children and teens the opportunity to attend the Wonder
movie screening that is being held as part of the #ChooseKindness campaign. The Library is offering
programing to coincide with the campaign.

VII. MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The Board
recognized Joe Purtell for coordinating the NEA Big Read.

Haskett Library for the public.
