CALL TO ORDER — The agenda having been posted on February 7, 2018, the regular meeting of the Anaheim
Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Laviguer at 5:04 p.m.

L INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS:
A. FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The next multi -media sale will be March 3,
2018 at the Central Library. The Friends purchased a table at the Anaheim Public Library Foundation's
Mystery Authors Luncheon. The book nook continues to be a good source of income. They are actively
seeking new members.
B. FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: FOCAL members conducted a workday in late January
to process recent book donations. Books in poor condition for selling are being shared with book gifting
endeavors in Anaheim, bringing free books to families who would not likely otherwise be able to own
books. Refinement of the outdoor area to the east of the Library continues. Thanks to a generous donation
and working with City of Anaheim guidelines, a split rail fence is being built to define the area.
C. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Anaheim Public Library Foundation is
accepting reservations by mail and online for the Mystery Authors Luncheon on April 15, 2018. Book
bags are for sale at almost all Anaheim Public Library locations. They thanked the Friends of Anaheim
Public Library and the Friends of the Canyon Hills Library for their sponsorship by placing an ad in the
program. The Foundation also thanks Audrey Lujan, Joe Purtell, Thomas Edelblute, and other Library
staff for actively pursuing sponsorships for the Foundation. The author event with Christopher Lentz on
February 5th was successful. The Foundation is sponsoring another author event with local author Harvey
Gomberg, Monday, February 261h, from 6:00pm — 7:30pm at the Central Library.

II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE JANUARY 8, 2017: The minutes were approved as presented.

A. LIBRARY RULES OF CONDUCT: The City Attorney's Office is reviewing the possibility of having the
Rules of Conduct made into an Ordinance that will also apply to other Community Services facilities that
directly serve the public.

IV. NEW BUSINESS:
A. LIBRARY HOURS SURVEY: Brent reported that Library staff has put together a draft survey to see if the
Library's operational hours are still serving the needs of the residents. The survey will help determine if
changes are needed to current library hours at each location. If additional hours are to be added additional
full-time staff will be needed for safety and operational reasons. Two Board Members and Library staff
will meet to incorporate the Library Board's input in the format of the survey. These surveys will be
available at each library location as well as online.
B. LIBRARY BOARD AD IN ANAHIEM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION AUTHROS' LUNCHEON
PROGRAM: The Library Board agreed to personally sponsor the inside front cover for $150.00.
C. POET LAUREATE: Stan reported that the committee has put forth a recommendation for the Poet Laureate
to the Cultural and Heritage Commission.
V. INFORMATION
• The Capital Projects report was revised to include the funding source for each project.
• The Library is partnering with the Anaheim Police Department to create a Public Safety Leadership
Library that will feature a collection of mentoring materials. The Anaheim Fire Department and Human
Resources Department have joined this partnership. Public Service Announcements are being done for
the Police and Fire Department talking about the importance of reading leadership materials. They are
also working with the Police Department Pipeline to possibly establish a teen collection for those
interested in a career in public safety.
• Staff is waiting to hear if the Library will receive the NEA Big Read for 2019. If the grant is received
the book will be A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines and will take place during Black History
Month.
• The Bookmobile will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary on February 14, 2018.
• AnaCon was a huge success, attendance exceeded last year.
B. BUDGET: An issue with the system has delayed the budget process.
C. MARKETING: Audrey shared the Marketing Highlights from 2017.
D. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: None.
VI. ACTIVITY REPORTS
A. STATISTICS: Stan expressed concern for the circulation of materials statistics.
B. ACTIVITY REPORTS: Included in packet.
VII. MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The Board
recognized Joe Purtell for his role on the Poet Laureate Committee.
MEMBER JOHN LEOS: The OC Probation teens participated in the robotics event and loved it.

MEMBER CLAUDIA PEREZ-FIGUEROA: Attended the Black History Parade and enjoyed seeing the
Bookmobile there. Claudia would like to have the City Council Members and School Board Members invited
to the Library Board Meetings.
VICE CHAIR, STAN OFTELIE: None.
CHAIR DAVID LAVIGUER: Requested information on the possibility of patrons working off library fines.
A. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be March 12, 2018 at the Heritage Center.
B. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Laviguer adjourned the meeting at 6:35 p.m.
