ACTION TAKEN
1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Hamida called the meeting to order at 6:36 p.m.
2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Chair Hamida.
3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None.
4. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: Anaheim Sporn introduced Holly Unruh, the new Community Services
Superintendent, who will be the City staff liaison for the Commission.
5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Hamida presented the February 15, 2018 minutes to the Commissioners for
changes or corrections. Vice Chair Chuchua made a motion to approve the February 15, 2018 meeting minutes,
seconded by Commissioner Daniels. The motion was approved with five votes in favor and one abstention by
Commissioner Brunette; Chair Hamida accepted the minutes.
6. SUB -COMMITTEES:
a) Center Gallery: Chair Hamida reported the exhibit, "Hawaii Life", was well attended. The next exhibit will be of artist,
Roger Bennett, who will exhibit "Seeing is Believing: Photographs of Our Amazing World". The opening reception will
be on May 3rd. A discussion was held on the advertising and outreach for the Center Gallery openings.
Chair Hamida questioned if there are other locations in the City where public art can be displayed. Anaheim Sporn
stated the Center Gallery is one location, but can check if there are other locations in the City. The Commission
discussed ideas of other possible locations to display art at alternative spaces, including the local high schools.
b) Public Art Program: Chair Hamida reported a working group will be meeting on April 301" to discuss the Public Art
Projects City Ordinance Proposal. Chair Hamida stated the sub -committee will setup a meeting to create a new
proposal focusing on murals.
Chair Hamida attended a meeting put together by Council Member Barnes regarding the Anaheim Community Art
Canvas Project that will be displayed at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Beach Boulevard. High school student
artists submitted their art work and ten pieces were chosen to be displayed. There will be a voting contest where the
top three will receive a monetary prize. Information can be found on the Anaheim Community Canvas website.
c) Multi -Cultural Event: Anaheim Sporn clarified the Commission cannot take on the role of organizing a multi -cultural
event. The Commission was encouraged to advocate and connect with other programs or organizations to create
such an event. A discussion was held regarding the process of a non-profit organization hosting a multi -cultural
event and how staff can assist with guidance in event locations. Staff will come back to the next meeting with more
information.

d) Poet Laureate: Commissioner Pettibone reported the new Poet Laureate, Grant Hier, will be recognized by the City
Council in May. Anaheim Sporn stated Mr. Hier will be serving a two-year term and is already working with the City
on events at the Library as well as other locations throughout the City.
e) Heritage: Commissioner Daniels reported he has been working with Jane Newell on focusing on the original City Hall
buildings/locations where a recognition plaque can be installed. Future site recommendations that are worthy of
recognition are welcome. Jane Newell reported other cities were looked into and there are various ways that sites
are recognized. A write-up will be brought to the Commission for approval to create a plaque program for the City.
7. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Commissioner Pettibone reported that April is National Poetry Month. Poet Laureate, Grant
Hier, will be at the Central Library for an evening with poets on April 26th.
Commissioner Pettibone reported the annual MUZEO benefit will be held on April 21St
Chair Hamida reported the start of Ramadan is May 15th. Also, this month has been recognized as American Heritage
Month by Congress.
Vice Chair Chuchua announced the Taste of Anaheim will be held on May 17tH
Jane Newell reported the Anaheim Historical Society will be hosting the "Rise of the 'Gasoline Cowboy'— The Early Years
of Motorcycle Outdoor Recreation in California" on May 19th. A local Historian/Author, Paul F. Clark, will be the guest
speaker.
8. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Hamida adjourned the meeting at 7:38 p.m.
NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim
Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
