CALL TO ORDER – The agenda having been posted on September 5, 2019, the regular meeting of the Anaheim
Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Vice Chair Oftelie at 5:05 p.m.

I.INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS:
A.FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: Their multi-media sale at Central Library
was held on Saturday, September 7, 2019. The Friends made $550.00. The Friends appreciated the help of
Library staff. Books and magazines are always in need to sell in their book nooks.
B.FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: They are grateful for the ongoing generosity of the
Anaheim community! Funds gained from book and collectible sales support Canyon Hills Library and
contribute to Anaheim Public Library endeavors. The Friends also like to give back to the community that
generates their treasury. To begin the 2019-2020 school year, Friends of Canyon Hills gave funds for book
purchasing to each Library of five elementary schools serving the Canyon Library. Each book purchased
with these funds will have a sticker stating it was a gift from Friends of Canyon Anaheim Library. Canyon
Rim, Crescent, Imperial, Nohl Canyon, and Running Springs Elementary Schools are all extremely
appreciative of their gift to their libraries. FOCAL is glad to provide more books for local school libraries.
C.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Foundation is working hard on their 25th
Annual Mystery Authors Luncheon. Modern Woodmen of America donated in-demand books to the
collection. Ginny toured The Hive, a place for non-profits to meet and work sponsored by the Samueli
Foundation. She also attended an Anahei’m First meeting with Joan Pettite speaking about the role of the
Foundation. This fiscal year the Foundation will be donating over $65,000 to the Library for programs,
collections, and materials. Ginny recognized Emily Otis, Chloe Van Stralendorff and the rest of the Library
staff for hosting an amazing OC Zine Fest. She attended the Friends Book Sale and the I am an American
exhibit at the Muzeo.
D.UNSCHEDULED ORAL COMMUNICATION: Guest Robert Hernandez introduced himself as a Library
supporter and member of Anahe’im First. Brenda Maguire presented a recognition to Romina Irizarry,
Senior Library Clerk at Sunkist Library for her kindness and excellent customer service. Stan presented
Emily Otis with a Library Board Certificate of Recognition for securing multiple grants.
E.WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: None.
II.APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE AUGUST 12, 2019 MEETING: The minutes were approved as
presented.

III.UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL ON THE CONDITION OF THE
LIBRARIES FOR FISCAL YEAR 2018/19 PER ARTICLE IX. APPOINTIVE BOARDS AND
COMMISSIONS, Section 908: David Laviguer, Chair is on vacation but extended his support for the letter
as presented in the packet. MOTION: THAT THE LIBRARY BOARD APPROVE THE ANAHEIM
PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO THE CITY COUNCIL AS PRESENTED: M/S SO/RC, 4 AYES
IV.NEW BUSINESS:
A.SUMMER READING PROGRAM: Nissa Perez-Montoya presented the results of the Children’s Summer
Reading Program. The Library utilized Read Squared, a new reading tracking software. Children’s
participation increased by 33% this year. Nissa thanked the Friends of the Anaheim Public Library for their
support that made the Summer Reading Program possible. Additional sponsors such as Mickey’s Attic
(Disneyland Resort), Varsity Burger, Rubios, etc. were thanked for their donations.
Emily Otis presented on the Teen Summer Reading Program sponsored by H&R Block in partnership with
the Anaheim Public Library Foundation. Teen participation increased by 44% with 81% more books read
this year.
B.APL/ALTRUSA/AESD CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST: Audrey thanked the Library Board Members
for volunteering to serve as judges. The contest has expanded this year to all 23 Anaheim Elementary
School District Schools. The 23 winners will be recognized by the School Board.
V.INFORMATION
A.ANAHE’IM FIRST: Linda shared that Town Hall Meetings are being held throughout the City and
encouraged everyone to attend and to go online and take the survey for Anahe’im First funding priorities.
B.CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT:
Audrey reported there was a drainage issue at the Carnegie Building caused by a pole in the steps.
The steps outside the Carnegie are currently unavailable until this issue is fixed.
C.BUDGET: Audrey thanked the City Manager, Finance Director and the City Council for the additional
money for replacing the outdated study carrels and funding for additional security cameras.
VI.ACTIVITY REPORTS
A.STATISTICS: Stan asked for clarification on the Virtual Board Report format. He also noted a decline in
online service logins. Staff will look into the reformatting the report and explained that a large percentage
of the decline was due to a large decrease in the new book alerts. Stan noted that patron count, circulation,
and collection size continue to decline.
B.ACTIVITY REPORTS: None.
C.MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The Board
recognized Founders’ Park for receiving an award from Anaheim Beautiful and for Library staff members
involved in organizing OC Zine Fest.

VII.BOARD ITEMS
MEMBER ROSE CHEN: Attempted to attend OC Zine Fest but the parking lot was full, she was glad to see
that it was that successful.
MEMBER LINDA NEWBY: Requested to have a tour of Central Library at the next Board Meeting and invite
the City Manager, Assistant City Manager, Community Services Director, and Dr. Jose Moreno, Council
Member for District 3 where Central Library is located. Linda proposed to eliminate mailed agendas to reduce
the cost of staff time and materials.

VICE CHAIR STAN OFTELIE: None.
VIII.MISCELLANEOUS
A.NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be October 14, 2019, at the Central Library.
B.ADJOURNMENT: Vice Chair Oftelie adjourned the meeting at 6:39 p.m.
