A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ANAHEIM TO RECOGNIZE APRIL 2021 AS SEXUAL
ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS, in the United States, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and
was first observed nationally in April 2001, after the alarming statistics of sexual assaults and
underreporting became more apparent; and
WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month calls attention to the fact that sexual
harassment, assault, and abuse are widespread and impacts millions of adults, teenagers, and
children; and
WHEREAS, the goal of Sexual Assault Awareness Month is to raise public awareness
about sexual violence and educate communities on how to prevent it; and
WHEREAS, sexual violence may take many forms, including acquaintance, stranger,
spousal, and gang rape, incest, child sexual abuse, elder sexual abuse, sexual abuse and
exploitation of disabled persons, commercial sex trafficking, sexual harassment, and stalking; and
WHEREAS, rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment harm our community, and
statistics show that one out of every six American women have been victims of attempted or
completed rape, and one out of every ten men; and
WHEREAS, child sexual abuse prevention must be a priority to confront the reality that
what is reported is that one in nine girls and one in 53 boys under the age of 18 experience sexual
abuse or assault at the hands of an adult; and
WHEREAS, sexual assault affects individuals across all ages, abilities, sexual orientations,
gender identities, and of all racial, social, religious, ethnic, and economic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center is promoting thirty days of
SAAM with this year's theme "We can build safe online spaces" which recognizes sexual
harassment, assault, and abuse can happen anywhere including in online spaces; and
WHEREAS,on National Day of Action, on April 6,2021,residents are encouraged to wear
teal, the color for SAAM, and to wear denim on April 28, 2021, for Denim day; and
WHEREAS, sustainable change can begin when we challenge societal norms and attitudes
that promote a culture of abuse and oppression; and
WHEREAS, the City of Anaheim is committed to the awareness, prevention, and
deterrence of sexual violence affecting individuals in the United States.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Anaheim
recognize April 2021 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and hopes that each day is an
opportunity to create a positive change for the future.
THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION is approved and adopted by the City Council of the
City of Anaheim this 13 day of April , 2021 by the following roll call vote:
AYES: Mayor Sidhu and Council Members Faessel, Diaz, Brandman,
Moreno, Valencia, and O'Neil
