Subject: Opposition to increase in police funding and purchase of a police robot - Sunrise
Orange County
I'm Kyler Chin, the Executive Director of Sunrise Movement Orange County.
Agenda items 8, 9, and 10 raise significant concerns with our movement. Item 9 spends $64,618 + tax. Why?
Buying a tactical robot has no benefit for the residents of Anaheim. When people think of public safety, it
services, not cops that bring them safety.
Anaheim is suffering several concurrent crises. Crisis of racism in law enforcement. Crisis of health. The
climate crisis. It is clear that Anaheim must direct investment away from the police department and to real
public change. Anaheim can be creating housing, food, and water as a human right with these funds and offer
real relief with these funds. We can be decarbonizing our economy, mitigating and preventing climate change,
protecting our sacred environment and wildlife, and creating thousands of good -paying livable jobs. We can
create real mental health departments and publicly run community care sectors. We could be improving the
quality of life of Anaheim residents and be planting trees. Imagine the type of public good we could do with
$64k + all the costs to continuously upgrade this equipment. This police robot would simply be a hole we're
throwing money at that never ends. The council must make the right moves to protect Anaheim from the crisis
that matters right now and now continuously throw money at useless projects.
Be brave, fight for us the people.
