The Honorable Ashleigh Aitken
City of Anaheim
200 S. Anaheim Blvd.
Anaheim, CA 92805
Dear Mayor Aitken and City Councilmembers,
We are writing to express our deep concern with a potential ballot measure being promoted by
UNITE HERE Local 11. Based on the initial review of the measure, it is clear it will have lasting
and irrevocable negative impacts on residents, jobs, businesses, and taxpayers in Anaheim. It is
important to note that UNITE HERE's effort specifically targets only Anaheim residents, jobs,
taxpayers and businesses, therefore financially benefiting neighboring communities.
Because of the seriousness of this issue, we encourage the City Council to take full advantage of
state law, which allows cities to protect their communities to respond to such efforts. State law
provides that a thorough economic impact analysis can be conducted by the city in anticipation
of such a measure. The impact analysis includes but is not limited to, increased costs to Anaheim
residents, reduction in city services (police, fire, parks, libraries), private-sectorjob losses, and
the fiscal impact of visitors choosing to stay in Garden Grove hotels and commuting into Anaheim
in order avoid the impacts of UNITE HERE's proposal.
In addition to targeting jobs in Anaheim, this poorly written measure will specifically increase
costs to residents who visit city -owned facilities such as Angel Stadium, the Honda Center, and
the Anaheim Convention Center. Financially, Portofino as part of Anaheim tax contributor will
not sustain with 45 employees in the hotel and majority of the rooms are suite.
Thank you in advance for your leadership and efforts to prepare for the potential impacts this
targeted effort will have on Anaheim's General Fund, residents, and employment opportunities
prior to taking any official action on UNITE HERE's proposed measure.
We are anxious to work with the City Council and others to oppose this extreme and negative
proposal. By working collaboratively, we can protect city revenues/services, residents and job
opportunities here in Anaheim.
S rely,
C rles Eman
