Dear Councilmember Steve Faessel:
We are writing to express our deep concern with a potential ballot measure being promoted by UNITE
HERE Local 11. Based on the initial review of the measure, it is clear it will have lasting and irrevocable
negative impacts on residents, jobs, businesses, and taxpayers in Anaheim. It is important to note that
UNITE HERE’s effort specifically targets only Anaheim residents, jobs, taxpayers and businesses, therefore
financially benefiting neighboring communities.
Because of the seriousness of this issue, we encourage the City Council to take full advantage of state law,
which allows cities to protect their communities to respond to such efforts. State law provides that a
thorough economic impact analysis can be conducted by the city in anticipation of such a measure. The
impact analysis includes but is not limited to, increased costs to Anaheim residents, reduction in city
services (police, fire, parks, libraries), private-sector job losses, and the fiscal impact of visitors choosing
to stay in Garden Grove hotels and commuting into Anaheim in order avoid the impacts of UNITE HERE’s
proposal.

Our family has been in the lodging industry in Anaheim since 1967. Our properties are our family
legacies. This measure would directly impact our business in a devastating way. We hope that you will
oppose this negative proposal.
In addition to targeting jobs in Anaheim, this poorly written measure will specifically increase costs to
residents who visit city-owned facilities such as Angel Stadium, the Honda Center, and the Anaheim
Convention Center.
Thank you in advance for your leadership and efforts to prepare for the potential impacts this targeted
effort will have on Anaheim’s General Fund, residents, and employment opportunities prior to taking any
official action on UNITE HERE’s proposed measure.
We are anxious to work with the City Council and others to oppose this extreme and negative
proposal. By working collaboratively, we can protect city revenues/services, residents and job
opportunities here in Anaheim.
Sincerely,
Patty Smith
