RE:SUPPORT Agenda Item #19 -ADOPT THE “HOTEL AND EVENT CENTER
MINIMUM WAGE,WORKER RETENTION,AND HOTEL WORKER SAFETY AND
WORKLOAD INITIATIVE”ORDINANCE
Dear Mayor Aitken and City Councilmembers,
I write on behalf of Chispa to express our support for Item 19 and urge the Council to adopt UNITE HERE
Local 11’s “Hotel and Event Center Minimum Wage,Worker Retention, and Hotel Worker Safety and
Workload Initiative”Ordinance. The City of Anaheim (City)must commit to protecting the wellbeing and
rights of its hotel workers, who are suffering low wages and intolerable working conditions.
Chispa seeks to engage with excluded peoples to uproot systems of oppression and cultivate
systems grounded in community accountability, solidarity, and self-determination for our
communities to thrive. We are a membership-based organization for young Latinxs advocating for
systemic changes across Orange County.
Anaheim is renowned for Disneyland Resort, one of the largest resort industries in the world, which
attracts millions of visitors from all across the globe to visit the City and stay in hotels. The industry relies
on the tireless work of hotel workers for its success.Unfortunately, many of these workers are facing
horrific working conditions, including sexual assault and other threatening situations. In addition, with the
cost of living and rent on the rise, many hotel workers struggle to make ends meet. These unjust working
conditions and low wages have prompted hotel workers to take action and gather thousands of petition
signatures to introduce a Hotel Worker Protection Ordinance on the ballot.UNITE HERE Local 11, a
union representing 32,000 hotel workers in Southern California and Arizona,is leading this effort.
UNITE HERE Local 11’s proposed Ordinance would require hotels to pay hotel workers a minimum wage
of $25 per hour.Additionally, the Ordinance would enhance protections of hotel workers by providing
panic buttons, which they can use in case of emergencies or threatening situations.
Hotel workers cannot wait any longer for better pay and workplace protections.Anaheim should adopt the
proposed Hotel Worker Protection Ordinance, following in the footsteps of Irvine, which became the first
City in Orange County to pass such an Ordinance. We urge you to take action and send a clear message
that our community values the well-being and rights of hotel workers.Let's make history and ensure that
all hotel workers are treated with the respect and fairness they deserve.
Sincerely,
Bulmaro Vicente
