Cultural & Heritage 2021/08/19MINUTES CULTURAL AND HERITAGE COMMISSION DOWNTOWN ANAHEIM COMMUNITY CENTER, PATIO AREA, 250 E. CENTER ST., ANAHEIM, CA 92805 AUGUST 19, 2021 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Karen Uyematsu, Vice Chair Jane Newell, Heritage Service Manager Alejandrina Arellano Holly Unruh, Community Services Superintendent Kristen Maahs Eleanor Granflor, Sr. Secretary Melahat Rafiei Robert Sanchez COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: William Camargo, Chair A G E N D A A C T I O N T A K E N 1. CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Uyematsu called the meeting to order at 6:34 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Rafiei. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 4. SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Vice Chair Uyematsu presented the July 15, 2021 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Commissioner Sanchez made a motion to approve the July 15, 2021 minutes, seconded by Commissioner Maahs. There were four votes in favor and one abstention by Commissioner Rafiei to approve the minutes; Vice Chair Uyematsu accepted the minutes. 6. SUB-COMMITTEES: a) Center Gallery: Holly Unruh reported the Center Gallery is currently open with art displayed by the Anaheim Arts Association. There are two more exhibits scheduled for the remainder of the year; the next exhibit will display the art of the city’s youth that was showcased virtually during the closure. Staff is still looking to schedule exhibits for the 2022 calendar year. Questions were answered regarding art displayed by local high schools and if Orange Unified School District is included in the invitation to display youth art work. b) Public Art Program: Holly Unruh encouraged the Commission to continue networking with the community for feedback of the Public Art Program. A final report will be completed in the next few months. Questions were answered regarding contact with other cities who already have a public art plan implemented. c) Poet Laureate: Holly Unruh reported the recommendation is scheduled to go to City Council for approval. d) Heritage: Jane Newell reported that staff has met with the Planning Department and nine applications have been received for the Mills Act Program. e) Culture: Commissioner Sanchez provided a brief overview of Commissioner roles and responsibilities and the research found for neighboring cities in regards to cultural events. Questions were answered regarding marketing for events held in Anaheim. 7. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Holly Unruh reported a second pop-up event for the “Symphony on the Go” will be held next Thursday, August 26th at Juarez Park. The first event will be held on August 25th from 5-6:30pm, “The First Families of Disneyland” and the second event will be held on September 22nd, “Reflections of Mexican Anaheim 1900-1955”. 8. ADJOURNMENT: Vice Chair Uyematsu adjourned the meeting at 7:05 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 16, 2021 at 6:30 p.m.
