ABSENT:David Laviguer
STAFF:Audrey Lujan, City Librarian; Jennifer Foxx, PT Management Assistant; April Ray, Library
Services Supervisor
I.INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS:
A.FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The Friends of Anaheim Public
Library have been selling discarded books (worn out or out dated materials) to third party vendors.
This process has helped raise approximately $500 during this time when the Friends are unable to
sell books in the Book Nook. The Library is currently not accepting donations from the public.
Donations will be accepted again once items no longer need to be quarantined.
B.FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: Many residents would like to commend the
Canyon Hills and East Library staff members on their outstanding service to our community. Kris
Lasher has been a thankful beneficiary of them finding books and arranging for an easy, contact-
free checkout and return at Canyon Hills. Additionally, it was been delightful to participate in a
Zoom Talks & Treats book discussion Librarian Rose Perrone facilitated last month. Although we
cannot go inside our Libraries at this time, effective Library services are being made available to
Anaheim residents
C.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Foundation would like to
congratulate the Anaheim Public Library on their two American Library Association PR Xchange
awards. They are so happy that they could fund the library with their marketing to reach the
Anaheim Community. Special congratulations to the Communications Team of Chloe Van
Stralendorff and Anli Chen for their outstanding creativity. The Foundation met in June to grant
the Library their complete wish list of items for the new year including the continuation of the
eBook collection. The adult collection, continuation of Patron Point, teen programming, the NEA
Big Read, seed money for AnaCon and OC Zine Fest, STEAM Kits on the Go, and new programs
including HOT TITLES at Sunkist, and an AV system upgrade and new books at Euclid. The
Foundation has been meeting via Zoom. They are gearing up for our membership drive in
September and will be mailing out information very soon. They are so appreciative of all those
using Amazon Smiles and designating the Anaheim Public Library Foundation as their charity of
choice. It is amazing how quickly purchases add up to donations for this charity. If you have not
yet signed up it is easy…just go to Amazon Smiles and choose us as your charity, then order away
like you normally do on Amazon. Then 0.01% of your total will go directly to the Foundation.
D.UNSCHEDULED ORAL COMMUNICATION: None.

Anaheim Public Library. Audrey shared that the Friends have reached out via email and telephone.
II.APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE JULY 13, 2020 MEETING: The minutes were approved as
presented.
III.UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
A.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL ON THE CONDITION
OF THE LIBRARIES FOR FISCAL YEAR 2019/20 PER ARTICLE IX. APPOINTIVE
BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS, SECTION 908: The Board reviewed the draft and
requested that a section for areas of concern be added to address money needed for the
collection and staffing.
IV.NEW BUSINESS:
A.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY/ALTRUSA/AESD CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST: Once
again the Library is partnering with the Altrusa and the Anaheim Elementary School District to
hold a creative writing contest for 4th grade students in the AESD. Every Library Board Member
volunteered to serve as a judge this year.
B.IMPACT OF SOCIAL DISTANCING ON LIBRARY PROGRAMS: The Board requested
information on how social distancing will impact Library programs. Audrey shared that in person
programs are on hold until the Library opens. Once the Library is open, there are outdoor spaces
that can be used as well as large meeting rooms where social distancing with fewer people could be
accommodated.
C.COVID-19 AND LIBRARY MATERIALS: The Board requested information on how the Library
handles returned library materials during this time. April shared the process for quarantining
materials is that all items are held for four days and checked in on the fifth day. This is based on
the RELAM Study. Plans are being made to address potential storage issues upon opening.
V.INFORMATION
A.CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT:
Audrey attended Council Member Dr. Moreno’s virtual community meeting. This was an
amazing opportunity to inform the community of how the Library is serving the residents
during this time.
Library staff have been meeting with local school districts to reach out and inform their
families of the services the Library is offering.
C.BUDGET: No update.
