CALL TO ORDER – The agenda having been posted on September 9, 2021, the regular meeting of the
Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Vice Chair Newby at 4:05 p.m.
PRESENT:Rose Chen, Michelle Dang, Shelby Hogan, David Laviguer, Linda Newby

I.INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS:
A.FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The Friends are sad to announce
the death of their former President and current Corresponding Secretary Helen Carter’s husband
Joe Carter after 71 years of marriage. The Friends Board has recently added a new member –
Fran Cox. They made $192 at their September Book Sale. The Book Nook made $741 which is
almost back to the pre-pandemic amount. Their next book sale will be on October 15, 2021, at
the Central Library.
B.FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: The Friends of Canyon Hills Anaheim
Library (FOCAL) has elected officers for 2022. The Board Officers are: Karen Lockwood –
President, Kris Lasher – Secretary, Berdella Smith – Treasurer, Louise Fry – Membership, Betsy
Kasten and Donna Clark - Book Selling & Donation Management, and Peggy Markson -
Publicity.
C.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Foundation is updating their
website. The 25th annual Mystery Author’s Luncheon has been rescheduled to April 24, 2022.
D.UNSCHEDULED ORAL COMMUNICATION: None.
E.WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: None.
II.APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 13, 2021 MEETING: The minutes were
approved as presented.
III.UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
A.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL ON THE CONDITION OF
THE LIBRARIES FOR FISCAL YEAR 2020/21 PER ARTICLE IX. APPOINTIVE BOARDS
AND COMMISSIONS, SECTION 908: MOTION: THAT THE LIBRARY BOARD
APPROVE THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO THE CITY COUNCIL AS

IV.NEW BUSINESS:
A.NEA BIG READ: Anaheim Public Library received the NEA Big Read Grant for $15,000 to
focus month-long programming and activities around the book “In the Time of the Butterflies”
by Julia Alvarez. The kick-off event had over 200 in attendance and included food, music, and a
butterfly release. Guadalupe Gomez thanked Tony Lam for taking the lead on this grant.
B.HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH: Guadalupe reported that programming for Hispanic Heritage
Month was held in conjunction with the NEA Big Read. Popular programs included bilingual
storytimes, Reflections on Hispanics in Anaheim, Mexican American Baseball in California,
"The “Crazy Courage” of the Mirabal Sisters: Gender and Political Resistance in the Struggle
Against the Trujillo Dictatorship," and many more.
C.2022 POET LAUREATE SELECTION: Michelle Dang volunteered to fill the Library Board
vacancy on the selection committee.
D.ELECTION OF CHAIR: MOTION: That the Library Board nominate and elect David
Laviguer as Chair of the Library Board to a term of October 2022. M/S: LN/RC, 5 ayes
E.ELECTION OF VICE CHAIR: MOTION: That the Library Board nominate and elect
Linda Newby as Vice Chair of the Library Board to a term of October 2022. M/S: DL/RC,
5 ayes
V.INFORMATION
A.CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT:
The City Council approved the amended bids for the Central Green Space and Euclid Green
Space.
Facility Maintenance is preparing a scope of work to replace/refurbish the windows at the
Carnegie Library.
B.BUDGET: None.
VI.ACTIVITY REPORTS
A.STATISTICS: Linda requested information on how the “New Book Alert” statistics are counted.
B.ACTIVITY REPORTS: None.
C.MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: Linda
recognized the staff of North Shore Clinical for their customer service. North Shore Clinical is
conducting free drive up COVID testing in the Central Library parking lot as a result of a
coordinated effort with the Anaheim Police Department.

VII.BOARD ITEMS
MEMBER MICHELLE DANG: Enjoyed the Library Card Sign-up Month Scavenger Hunt and
stated this was a great way to encourage residents to sign up for Library Cards She requested the
library look into a community sharing where residents wanting to learn Spanish and residents
wanting to learn English could exchange information.
MEMBER ROSE CHEN: Donated a signed copy of the book “Granite.”
CHAIR LAVIGUER: Thanked Linda for running the meeting since he was attending via Zoom.
VICE CHAIR LINDA NEWBY: Requested to know how books are sorted in library catalog search
results.
VIII.MISCELLANEOUS
A.NEXT MEETING: The November 8, 2021 meeting was cancelled and the next meeting will be
December 9, 2021, at the Central Library.
B.ADJOURNMENT: Chair Laviguer adjourned the meeting at 4:43 p.m.
