CALL TO ORDER – The agenda having been posted on July 6, 2023, the regular meeting of the Anaheim
Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Vice Chair Newby at 4:30 p.m.
PRESENT:Rose Chen, Michelle Dang, Jackie Filbeck, Linda Newby, Elia Renteria-Garcia
STAFF:Audrey Lujan – City Librarian, Jennifer Foxx – PT Management Assistant
I.INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS:
A.ADMINISTER OATH TO LIBRARY BOARD MEMBERS JACKIE FILBECK AND ELIA
RENTERIA-GARCIA: The Oath of Affirmation of Allegiance for Public Office and
Employees was administered to Jackie Filbeck and Elia Renteria-Garcia.
B.FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The monthly sales are doing

well. The June sale raised $366, and the next sale is scheduled for July 21. The Friends are
proud to provide children’s books for the Summer Reading Program. Diane Sargent passed out
flyers for the book sales at the City’s monthly District Meetings. Bonnie Stevens, Treasurer,
and Nancy Carlberg, President, went to a meeting of officers of other Friends of the Library
groups held in the La Habra Library.
C.FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: FOCAL’s last flash sale was a huge success.

The next Flash Sale is July 28-29. In addition to their usual items they will be having a
“Christmas in July” sale table.
D.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: On Sunday, April 30, the
Anaheim Public Library Foundation held its 26th Mystery Authors Luncheon. There were 275
people in attendance and almost $30,000 was raised for the library. These funds will be used for
several of the library’s programs, including the new Makerspace at Haskett Library, teen
programming, eBooks for all libraries, STEAM programming, and seed money for Ancon and
Zinefest.
E.COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: Audrey shared thank you notes to Mobile Library staff
from Belage Manor Senior Housing Development for the nutrition for seniors program.
II.APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE JUNE 12, 2023 MEETING: The minutes were approved as
amended.
III.UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
A.ELECTION OF CHAIR: MOTION: That the Library Board nominate and elect Linda
Newby as Chair of the Library Board for a term through October 2023. M/S: MD/RC, 5
ayes.

IV.NEW BUSINESS:
A.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL ON THE CONDITION OF
THE LIBRARIES FOR FISCAL YEAR 2022/23 PER ARTICLE IX. APPOINTIVE BOARDS
AND COMMISSIONS, SECTION 908: A draft letter will be presented to the Board at the
August 14, 2023 Library Board Meeting.
V.INFORMATION
A.CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT:
Patron count has been increasing during the additional Saturday and Sunday hours. Staff
will begin programming on Sundays in August.

Central Library will celebrate its 60 Anniversary on Sunday, August 27, 2023, with
special programs, crafts, food, etc.
The Library will be hosting programs throughout the month for Chicano Heritage Month.
Audrey provided an update on staff recruitments.
B.BUDGET: City Council approved the budget.
VI.ACTIVITY REPORTS
A.STATISTICS: None.
B.ACTIVITY REPORTS: None.
C.MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The
Board recognized the Friends of the Anaheim Public Library for bringing much needed books to
the Orange County Jail. Library staff member Kimberly Johnson was recognized for
outstanding service to the children of Anaheim.
VII.BOARD ITEMS
MEMBER MICHELLE DANG: None.
MEMBER ROSE CHEN: Appreciates how Anaheim’s Libraries are growing bigger and better
while other cities are having to close libraries.
MEMBER JACKIE FILBECK: Thanked Audrey Lujan and Jennifer Foxx for their assistance in
making her feel so comfortable and providing her with all of the information she needs for the
Library Board. She is looking forward to her time on the Board.
MEMBER ELIA RENTERIA-GARICA: Thanked Linda Newby for taking her to ARTIC and
showing her what the Libraryhas to offer.

CHAIR LINDA NEWBY: Suggested the new Board Members do a Mobile Library ride-along.

A.NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be August 14, 2023, at the Central Library.
B.ADJOURNMENT: Vice Chair Newby adjourned the meeting at 6:00 p.m.
