CALL TO ORDER – The agenda having been posted on August 7, 2023, the regular meeting of the
Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Newby at 4:35 p.m.
PRESENT:Rose Chen, Michelle Dang, Jackie Filbeck, Linda Newby
ABSENT: Elia Renteria-Garcia
STAFF:Audrey Lujan – City Librarian, Jennifer Foxx – PT Management Assistant
I.INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS:
A.FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The July sale raised $476, even
with the children’s books being offered for free. Their next book sale is August 18, 2023. The
Friends have been giving paperbacks to the Orange County Jail and the Anaheim Regional
Hospital. They will explore sending books to help rebuild the Lahaina Library in the future.
They enjoyed the Summer Reading Program and the end of year party for the Children’s
Summer Reading Program.
B.FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: FOCAL’s last flash sale was a huge success.

The next Flash Sale is August 24-25. Their next regular meeting is September 21, 2023.
They will hold elections for their officers at the September meeting. FOCAL will donate money
to Elementary and Middle schools in the Anaheim Districts to purchase new books. In addition,
they have approved funds to implement several new programs at Canyon Hills Branch Library
thanks to the creative ideas of Librarian Jennifer DeBaun-Holmes.
C.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: Membership renewals were sent
out in July for 2023/24. The 2024 Mystery Authors Luncheon will be held on Sunday, March
17, 2024.
D.COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: Audrey shared thank you notes to Thomas Edelblute
from the Human Resources Department for in-servicing new City Supervisors. A public
comment addressed to the Anaheim City Council stating the importance of libraries was also
shared.
II.APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE JULY 10, 2023 MEETING: The minutes were approved as
presented.
III.UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
A.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL ON THE CONDITION OF
THE LIBRARIES FOR FISCAL YEAR 2022/23 PER ARTICLE IX. APPOINTIVE BOARDS
AND COMMISSIONS, SECTION 908: The letter will include an infographic and a draft letter
will be presented to the Board at the September 11, 2023 Library Board Meeting.

IV.NEW BUSINESS:
A.ELECTION OF VICE CHAIR: MOTION: That the Library Board nominate and elect
Rose Chen as Vice Chair of the Library Board for a term through October 2023. M/S:
MD/RC, 4 ayes.
B.CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST WITH AESD AND CESD: Planning has begun for the
2023APL/AESD/Altrusa Creative Writing Project.This year two Centralia Elementary
Schools have been invited to participate.
V.INFORMATION
A.CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT:

Central Library’s 60 Anniversary will be celebrated on Sunday, August 27, 2023. There
will be programs, crafts, cake, storytimes, and more!
Congressman Lou Correa has nominated Anaheim Public Library for the 2024 National
Medal for Museum and Library Science.

The Anaheim Reads kick-off event is Saturday, October 14, and the book is There, There
by Tommy Orange.

MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The
Library Board congratulated Library staff for the wonderful programing, customer service, and
their positive attitudes. Linda recognized Ponderosa Joint-Use Branch Library staff for the
culinary program and Convention Center Staff Debbie Juliani and Tom Morton for their
contributions to the program.
