CALL TO ORDER – The agenda having been posted on September 7, 2023; the regular meeting of the
Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Board Chair Linda Newby at 4:38 p.m.

I.INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS:
A.FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The August sale raised
$452.15,even with the children’s books being offered for free. They will return to charging 10
cents for children’s books at their next sale on September 15, 2023. The Friends thanked library
staff for creating the wonderful posters advertising their book sale. They appreciated the
Friends of Canyon Hills Library giving them books to sell in their book nook.
The Friends were happy to sponsor the book giveaway and the musical performance at Central

Library’s 60 Anniversary celebration and are looking for ways to celebrate their
th
60 anniversary of incorporation in 2024. They welcomed a new Board Member who
specializes in CDs.
The Friends appreciate the staff members who attended their last meeting to speak to them about
recycling and a demonstration of what to do in an emergency if they are in the basement.
B.FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: Officers will be elected at their next regular
meeting on September 21, 2023. The next Flash Sale is scheduled for September 29-30, 2024,
from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
C.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The Foundation has confirmed
two authors for their Mystery Authors Luncheon on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at the Sheraton.
The theme for 2024 is True Crime. Deborah Holt Larkin, author of “A Lovely Girl: The
Tragedy of Olga Duncan,” and James T Bartlett, author of “The Alaskan Blonde: The
Hollywood Story that Shocked America,” will be the panelists. Wendell Thomas, author of the
Cyd Redondo mysteries and an Adjunct Professor ofScreenwriting at UCLA will be the
moderator. Anaheim Public Library Foundation Board meetings are held the fourth Thursday of
the month, at 5:30 PM, at Central Library. The meetings are open to all who would like to
attend.
D.COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: Audrey shared a letter from Carol Latham recognizing

II.APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE AUGUST 14, 2023 MEETING: The minutes were approved
as presented.
III.UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
A.ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL ON THE CONDITION OF
THE LIBRARIES FOR FISCAL YEAR 2022/23 PER ARTICLE IX. APPOINTIVE BOARDS
AND COMMISSIONS, SECTION 908: The Board will review the draft letter and bring their
edits and comments to the October 9, 2023 Library Board Meeting.
IV.NEW BUSINESS:
A.TOT PRESENTATION: D’Anne Lee, Budget Supervisor presented on how TOT money is
collected and spent.
B.RECOGNITION OF SHELBY HOGAN: The Board recognized Shelby Hogan for her
dedication and years of service to the residents of Anaheim by serving on the Anaheim Public
Library Board of Trustees.
V.INFORMATION
A.CITY LIBRARIAN’S REPORT:
OC Zine Fest was very successful with 1,520 people in attendance. Audrey credited the
Library’s committee of Alessandra Gonzalez, Mary Grace Maloney, and Byron Adams as
well the OC Zine Fest Committee for the success of the event.
The Sunkist Library is hosting a Sunkist Salon, which is a language exchange group
between native English speakers and native Spanish speakers.
September is Library Card Sign-up month, and each Anaheim Public Library location will
have activities, such as scavenger hunts, games, prizes, etc.
Monica Sanchez shared how the libraries use Eventbrite to advertise library programs.

MEMBER ELIA RENTERIA-GARCIA: None.

MEMBER JACKIE FILBECK: The Central Library’s 60 Anniversary celebration was fabulous,
and she especially loved the special edition library card.
MEMBER MICHELLE DANG: Requested statistical information on international users and asked
the staff to consider expanding the language exchange program to include Chinese and Vietnamese
languages.
CHAIR LINDA NEWBY: None.

A.NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be October 9, 2023, at the Central Library.
