CALL TO ORDER — The agenda having been posted on July 5, 2024; the regular meeting of the Anaheim
Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Linda Newby at 4:30 p.m.
PRESENT: Rose Chen, Michelle Dang, Jackie Filbeck, Linda Newby, Elia Renteria-Garcia

GUEST:
INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS:
A. FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The Friends made $577.62 in
June, their best sale yet. The next book sale is July 19, 2024. On July 13, 2024, Angels
Baseball is hosting a fundraising night for the Friends, and on October 51 the Library will be
hosting a celebration of the Friend's 60t' anniversary of incorporation. The Friends look forward
to the opening of the Haskett Makerspace.
B. FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: Their yard sale was a big success. Patrons
snapped up many wonderful bargains donated by our members and the community such as a
bread maker with several recipe books, surround sound system with a sound bar, beautiful
dishes, a working radio/cassette player, and lots of really nice toys, etc. They made over $600
for the library and their projects. The next meeting is July 18, 2024, where they will be
presenting their slate of officers for next year. FOCAL is fortunate that all our current officers
have agreed to serve again for 2025! Next month they will be presenting 3 high school
volunteers with $500 scholarships for college. Their next flash sale is July 30 — 31, 2024 from
10:00 a.m. — 3:00 p.m.
C. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: APLF approved over $47,000 in
funding for Library programs for Fiscal Year 2024/25. Invitations to join the Foundation are
being mailed this month. The 28th Annual APLF Mystery Authors Luncheon will be Sunday,
April 6, 2025, at the Sheraton at the Park Hotel. They have secured Gary Phillips and Adam
Sikes for the panel and are working on securing more. Gary Phillips' latest book, Ash Dark as
Night, the second book in the One -Shot Harry series, has been featured on NPR as one of four
crime and suspense novels for "hot summer reading."

III. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
A. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL ON THE CONDITION OF
THE LIBRARIES FOR FISCAL YEAR 2023/24 PER ARTICLE IX. APPOINTIVE BOARDS
AND COMMISSIONS, SECTION 908: Library staff is working on a draft for the Library
Board to review.
IV. NEW BUSINESS:
A. AMNESTY MONTH: Julie Conn presented information on Anaheim Public Library's first ever
Amnesty Month. The Library recognizes that over 23,000 patrons have balances over $15.00
which prohibits them from borrowing library materials. In order to welcome them back to the
library, APL is offering an Amnesty Month in September in conjunction with Library Card
Sign-up Month. During the month of September, anyone visiting the Anaheim Public Library in
person will have their balance waived with the exception of STEAM Kits. There will be
giveaways, prizes, programs, cake, etc. to celebrate all month.
V. INFORMATION
A. CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT:
Audrey reported that the City is working on expanding Library Impact Fees citywide.
Currently, Library Impact Fees are only in the areas of Platinum Triangle and the East
Santa Ana Canyon area.
The City is in the preliminary stages of looking at a possible downtown Civic Complex that
would include City Halls, Police Department, Community Center, Library, etc.
Audey is investigating the possibility of creating a cafe at Central Library.
B. BUDGET: The City Council approved the budget for the new fiscal year.

C. MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: None.
VII. BOARD ITEMS
MEMBER JACKIE FILBECK: Presented Library Board Certificates of Recognition at the AESD
Board meeting to Juan Alvarez and Jessie Alvarez for Operation Literacy for repurposing books and
getting them back into the community. She is very thankful that Canyon Hills Branch Library
donated Korean books to the Korean program.

MEMBER MICHELLE DANG: Attended the bread making program at Haskett and is thankful for
the Library.
MEMBER ELIA RENTERIA-GARCIA: Enjoyed visiting the Library on a hot day and staying cool.
She suggested looking into an upcycling program for seniors.
VICE CHAIR ROSE CHEN: Appreciates how welcoming staff are to patrons who visit the Library.
CHAIR LINDA NEWBY: Appreciates how much money she saves using the Library versus buying
books.
VIII. MISCELLANEOUS
A. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be August 12, 2024, at a location to be determined.
B. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Newby adjourned the meeting at 5:50 p.m.
