CALL TO ORDER — The agenda having been posted on August 8, 2024; the regular meeting of the
Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Linda Newby at 4:31 p.m.
PRESENT: Rose Chen, Jackie Filbeck, Linda Newby, Elia Renteria-Garcia

I. INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS:
A. FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: The Friends made over $311.00
at their July book sale. The next book sale is August 16, 2024, 11:00 a.m. — 4:00 p.m. and
children's books will be free. They will explore extending the time to 4:30 p.m. in September.
The President is investigating the possibility of accepting Zelle at the book sales. Several
members participated in the Sumer Reading Program and enjoyed the adult's end of summer
party. The Friends acknowledged Lucky Duran for the putting together the party and they look
forward to the Winter Reading Program. The Memorial Plaque is done and ready to display.
They are working with the Sleuths and Spies Book Club to see if they can help with mystery
books and use the Gloria Keene memorial fund for this. Vice -President of Membership, Terry
Barker, has retired and William Cote is the new Membership Vice -President. The Friends are
looking forward to celebrating their 60t' anniversary in October. They appreciate the generous
sponsorships of Library programs by Varsity Burger and Raising Canes.
B. FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: They re-elected their current slate of
officers: Karen Lockwood — President, Amy Talaganis and Carolyn Anderson — Vice Presidents,
Barbara Wahlbrink— Secretary, Peggy Markson — Treasurer, and Louise Fry - Membership.
They awarded $500.00 college scholarships to 3 library volunteers, Kylo Nguyen, Alan
Marienfeld, and Chissta Katebzadeh. Their next sale is August 27-28, 2024, 10: 00 a.m. —
3:00 p.m.
C. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The 28th Annual APLF Mystery
Authors Luncheon will be Sunday, April 6, 2025, at the Sheraton at the Park Hotel. They have
secured Gary Phillips, author of the Harry Ingram mysteries, set in Los Angeles; Adam Sikes,
Landslide and The Underhanded international spy thrillers; and Terry Shames, author of the
Sam Craddock mysteries set in Texas. James T. Bartlett, a fan favorite from the 2024 panel,
will moderate. Be sure to renew your membership.
D. COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: None.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE JULY 8, 2024 MEETING: The minutes were approved as
presented.

III. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
A. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL ON THE CONDITION OF
THE LIBRARIES FOR FISCAL YEAR 2023/24 PER ARTICLE IX. APPOINTIVE BOARDS
AND COMMISSIONS, SECTION 908: Library staff discussed the outline of the report.
IV. NEW BUSINESS:
A. SOCIAL MEDIA IMPACT: Alessandra Gonzalez presented the social media statistics.
Anaheim Public Library has over 10,000 followers on Instagram and 122,000 impressions.
There has been a huge jump over the last two years. The Library's YouTube views have
increased over 457% since 2020. Facebook views have also increased substantially.
B. APL/AESD/ACSD/ALTRUSA CREATIVE WRITING PROJECT JUDGES: Ymelda Ventura
shared the timeline of the contest and requested several members of the Library Board to serve
as judges for the project.
V. INFORMATION
A. CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT:
• Thomas reported the Library's mobile app is still in development and will have new
features including being able to place a hold on an item.
• Don Hilliard is developing written instructions for patrons on accessing the eBook
collection.
B. BUDGET: None.
VI. ACTIVITY REPORTS
A. STATISTICS: Michelle requested an updated infographic.
B. ACTIVITY REPORTS: None.
C. MONTHLY RECOGNITION OF SUPPORT/CERTIFICATE BY BOARD MEMBERS: The
Board recognized Victoria Michaels, 25-year Master Gardener, for presenting gardening
programs for the Library. In addition, Victoria Michaels requested that Library employees
Jason Woods and Cassandra Amaya be recognized for assisting her with the gardening classes.
Scott Fretwell was also recognized for ensuring best-seller books are ordered as soon as
possible.

VICE CHAIR ROSE CHEN: Requested to know if law reference books are accepted as donations.
CHAIR LINDA NEWBY: Serves on the Anaheim Polic Foundation and they will be sharing their
promotional video "The Policing of Tomorrow" on September 26, 2024, at the Central Library.
VIII. MISCELLANEOUS
A. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be September 9, 2024, at a location to be determined.
B. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Newby adjourned the meeting at 5:06 p.m.
