Please note my opposition to the construction of an apartment complex on the property located in the area of Deer Canyon. My concern is based on the specific location rather than the desire to build new housing. Additional traffic will be generated by building in this location that currently experiences daily traffic congestion during afternoon commute times and whenever there are issues on the 91 freeway. Santa Ana Canyon and adjacent roads are unable to manage or to be modified to manage the traffic volume that will be generated by adding hundreds of residents to this area. Evacuation in the event of a wildfire or other emergency could likely be impossible, creating tragedies similar to those experienced in other places (Lahaina, Maui for example) with inadequate evacuation roadways. Deer Canyon is a rustic area, containing rugged terrain, trees and wildlife: it seems unwise to disrupt natural beauty which enhances our City. The Deer Canyon property should NOT be rezoned for apartments from the current zoning of single family homes. In the eastern section of our City, there are other locations that could be considered for building large apartment complexes. Good access to public transportation and streets that effectively manage volume traffic should be nearby..For example, consider shopping center properties with unoccupied stores, the vacant lot that once held Kaiser Hospital, empty lots on streets such as Orangethorpe and La Palma. A nice building with attractive amenities to provide good housing can be constructed in any location. Thank you for your consideration of my opposition to the Deer Canyon apartment construction.
