Dear Members of the City Council, I am writing to express my profound concern regarding the proposed Deer Canyon development project. As a resident of Anaheim Hills for several decades, I have experienced the serious challenges of emergency evacuations firsthand, particularly during wildfires. Our community has only one primary exit route, and during previous evacuations, this single exit was severely congested, bringing traffic to a terrifying standstill. One specific incident stands out: during a past evacuation, my daughter’s preschool called to inform me that they, too, were being evacuated due to the encroaching fire. What is usually a short drive took me over an hour and a half, leaving me feeling utterly helpless as I struggled to reach my child. The panic and fear that come with not being able to get your loved ones to safety is something I hope none of you ever have to experience, but it is a reality our community faces with our current infrastructure. Santa Ana Canyon Road is already not adequately equipped to handle emergency evacuations under the present population. Adding more residents through the Deer Canyon project could result in a catastrophic bottleneck in an emergency. We have all witnessed the tragic impact of inadequate evacuation routes, as seen in last year’s devastating fires in Lahaina, Maui. Let this be a lesson and a reminder of the stakes at hand. I urge the council to consider the very real and serious risks that this project could impose on our community’s safety. Please prioritize the lives and well-being of current residents by declining the Deer Canyon proposal. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. Sincerely, Nancy Flores 1
