Senior Citizen 2024/09/19MINUTES SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION September 19, 2024; 2:00 p.m. COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Janet Brown, Chair Brian Chwan, Community Services Superintendent Denise Barnes, Vice -Chair Maureen Richardson, Community Services Supervisor Sue Baltazar Beth Lapkowski, Administrative Assistant Kandee Beas Steve Brio GUESTS PRESENT: Frances Noteboom Lucky Duran, Senior Librarian Victor "Vic" Real Jorge Gavino, AltaMed PACE Tim Deutsch, O.C. Cemetery District Larry Ryan, RJM Design Group AGENDA ACTION TAKEN 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Brown called the meeting to order at 2:04 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Chair Brown led the Commission in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. 3. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Brown presented the minutes of the August 15, 2024, meeting. Commissioner Real made a motion for approval of the minutes, seconded by Commissioner Brio. The minutes were approved unanimously. 4. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 5. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: a. AltaMed PACE Program — Rene Carillo, Regional Director shared information about AltaMed's PACE program and answered questions from commissioners. He noted that they are looking to expand their clientele and invited the commission to share information. b. Tim Deutsch, General Manager, Orange County Cemetery District — Tim Deutsch gave an update on the cemetery project in Gypsum Canyon, a public cemetery that includes a first responder section, which is a first of its kind, as well as a section for allied soldiers such as those from the Korean or Viet Nam conflicts, and a veteran's cemetery. He and Larry Ryan from RJM Design Group reviewed the steps they have taken up to this point and answered questions from the commissioners. Tim Deutch announced that they are looking for community groups to assist with the raising and lowering of the flag on the site to make it a community event, and they would welcome the commissioners to join if they are available. 6. NEW BUSINESS: 7. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: a. Commission Name Change Proposal — Commissioner Noteboom made a motion to change the name of the Commission to Active Older Adult Commission, seconded by Commissioner Beas. Chair Brown stated opposition to putting "Active" in the title because many seniors would not consider themselves in that category. She also stated that she has asked many seniors how they feel about being called seniors and they like it. Commissioner Noteboom feels that many younger seniors don't like being called seniors. Commissioner Noteboom asked staff to check with other cities to see what their senior commissions are being called. Motion failed with four nayes, two Senior Citizen Commission September 19, 2024 Page 2 AGENDA ACTION TAKEN ayes and one abstention. Commissioner Brio suggested changing the name to Senior/Active Older Adult Commission or Active Older Adult/Senior Commission. Chair Brown asked to table the motion so staff can conduct research that Commissioner Noteboom requested. b. Anaheim Senior Citizen Strategic Plan — No Discussion. 8. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: a. Boards & Commissions Appreciation Dinner — Save the Date: October 15 at 5:30 p.m. — Brian Chwan invited the commission to the appreciation dinner which is being held at the Anaheim Convention Center. They will also receive a formal invitation. b. ACF Needs Assessment Update — Brian Chwan provided handouts for those unable to attend the report finding meeting and referred them to the ACF website for more detailed information. Chair Brown indicated that five points are listed on the handout, but they should go to the website for more comprehensive information. c. Blue Zones, Aging & Longevity — Commissioner Real provided additional information on Blue Zones for the commission. d. Brian Chwan distributed an invitation to the Grand Opening of Center Greens on Saturday, September 28, to the commissioners. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Brown adjourned the meeting at 3:12 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.
