Senior Citizen 2024/10/17MINUTES COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Janet Brown, Chair Denise Barnes, Vice -Chair Steve Brio Frances Noteboom Victor "Vic" Real COMMISSIONERS NOT PRESENT Sue Baltazar Kandee Beas SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION October 17, 2024; 2:00 p.m. STAFF PRESENT: Brian Chwan, Community Services Superintendent Maureen Richardson, Community Services Supervisor Beth Lapkowski, Administrative Assistant AGENDA ACTION TAKEN 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Brown called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Chair Brown led the Commission in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. 3. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Brown presented the minutes of the September 19, 2024, meeting. Commissioner Brio made a motion for approval of the minutes, seconded by Vice -Chair Barnes. The minutes were approved unanimously. 4. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 5. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None. 6. NEW BUSINESS: a. Senior Citizen Commission Representation at District Meetings & Events — Vice -Chair Barnes would like to be informed when there are opportunities for commissioners to be at public events. b. ACF Needs Assessment Findings — Chair Brown reviewed the categories that were identified: 1) Explore availability of additional physical space for older adults; 2) Provide diverse programming opportunities; 3) Publicize programming through various communication mechanisms; 4) Promote social engagement; and 5) Plan ahead for aging population. The commission discussed the items and look forward to hearing from the Anaheim Community Foundation Executive Director at the next meeting. Brian Chwan noted that the top priority at this time is the brick -and -mortar facility; the expansion of the Older Adult Program is in line with that as well as the other items listed in the Needs Assessment. There is no site identified at this time. Commissioner Noteboom mentioned that the bonds will be paid off in 2028 which will free up money, but that is a while off. She mentioned the possibility of combining something with the YMCA by Ross Park, and Brian Chwan stated that the inter -generational connection is something they are working on expanding in the city. Vice -Chair Barnes suggested showing announcements on the screen at City Council meetings to get the word out about services available to seniors. Maureen reviewed some of the ways they provide information about their programs. Chair Brown asked if the City was planning to do a strategic plan; Brian Chwan explained that this assessment was a starting point for that. Chair Brown reminded them that the California Master Plan for Aging has five goals: Housing for all ages and stages; health reimagined; inclusion and equity, not isolation; caregiving that works; and affordable aging. The commission discussed the idea of PSAs and producing some; Commissioner Senior Citizen Commission October 17, 2024 Page 2 AGENDA ACTION TAKEN Brio volunteered to assist, and suggested commissioners could post upcoming events on Facebook to spread the word as well. 7. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: a. Commission Name Change Proposal — Chair Brown asked if anyone would like to discuss this item; Commissioner Brio stated that they discussed at the last meeting possibly combining the name rather than one or the other. After discussion, Chair Brown made a motion to recommend to City Council to change the name from Senior Citizen Commission to Older Adult Advisory Commission, seconded by Commissioner Brio. Vote was four ayes and one nay; motion passed. 8. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: a. Blue Zones, Aging & Longevity — Commissioner Real shared additional information about Blue Zones. He spoke at the last Neighborhood District Meeting and shared information about the Senior Citizen Commission and information that can be found on the city website; he will speak at future meetings as well. He shared information about the different types of dementia. Maureen Richardson mentioned she was at a conference that had some good speakers about "eating well' and she will invite them to come to a future commission meeting. Commissioner Real met a gentleman at the recognition dinner who spoke about job opportunities for older adults; he requested he be invited to a meeting as well. Commissioner Noteboom stated Disney hires older adults; Chair Brown stated that the Office of Congressman Lous Correa will be holding an older adult job fair. b. Commissioner Noteboom shared there will be a membership luncheon for the Senior Club on October 26 with musical entertainment, all of whom are over 80 years of age. c. Chair Brown asked to have an item on the next agenda about the transition of commissioners who are terming out. d. Maureen Richardson shared with the commission the updated Active Older Adult website that Commissioner Brio has been so instrumental in updating. Commissioner Brio thanked city staff for their efforts in taking his ideas and making them a reality. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Brown adjourned the meeting at 3:15 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.
